"A perfect summer day is when the sun is shining, the breeze is blowing,
the birds are singing, and the lawn mower is broken."
- James Dent, author

While this is all true, we would argue that Mr. Dent forgot several important hallmarks of the ideal summer day in Silicon Valley -- open laptop, strong wireless connection, air conditioning (naturally), and a fun project to pass the long, hot summer hours. Summer is all about getting back to basics, and now that Google I/O has ended and everyone has had a chance to absorb the major announcements, we felt the time was ripe for a good old-fashioned, mid-summer hackathon.

Introducing GTUG Campout

GTUG Campout is a weekend-long event where participants will have an opportunity to design, develop, and demo a complete application over the course of three days. The event kicks off at the Googleplex in Mountain View on Friday, August 7th, where ideas and teams will come together. Teams will then have the rest of the weekend to build their applications before presenting their work to the public on Sunday evening.

Not Your Typical, Run-of-the-Mill Hackathon

Instead of back-to-back presentations followed by several variations of "Hello World," Campout is all about coding and completing a full-featured application using Google technologies with particular emphasis on Google Wave and App Engine. While there will be opportunities to try new APIs and learn new features, teams will be expected to produce a real, working application in 2.5 days in return for free meals and a chance for fame and fortune should one create the next killer app... and there may even be a few prizes to boot.

If you feel up to the challenge, please choose a single ticket of the type most appropriate for yourself and fill out the registration form. Attendance is capped, so register soon -- all registrations are on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Attendance is capped, so Register On Eventbrite soon -- all registrations are on a first-come-first-serve basis. When signing up, please choose a single ticket of the type most appropriate for yourself. At camp, we won't stop someone that signs up as a developer from designing or vice versa. =)
