6:30PM Introduction

6:40PM Announcement

6:45PM

Topic: Expand your market. Take your Android app to BlackBerry

Speaker: Larry McDonough

Speaker Bio:

Larry is a Principal Evangelist for BlackBerry.  He has spoken on numerous topics such as Mobile Monetization, Android development on BlackBerry, Mobile App Security, HTML5 vs. Native, and BlackBerry 10. Larry has written code that’s run in space for NASA, trained analysts in the Pentagon on an animation system he developed, he designed and built UI’s for Walt Disney Studios, and had his picture in National Geographic Magazine demonstrating a state-of-the-art motion capture system (Oct. 1995). Larry led the Java ME (J2ME) mobile product line at Sun Microsystems and managed all the OpenGL APIs at Silicon Graphics. Larry has a BS in Computer Science from UC Riverside and an MBA from UCLA’s Anderson School. He lives in Silicon Valley.

7:15PM

Topic: Google Glass is an Android device (almost)

We will cover wearable computing and functional fashion.  Where it has been and where it is going.
Then, we will talk about the experience of picking up Glass (very different).   What it is like to be in the Glass Explorer community.
We will have some fun playing with Glass as the audience is asked to issue command and see the response from Glass live (this is very interesting as Glass is still in beta)

We end with how to develop using the Mirror API and how to attach adb (debugger) and do native Android development on Glass. We will review my Nike+ Glassware project.

Google Glass attached to Eclipse adb debugger with CatLog output:

I got a Blackberry 10 Alpha B device. But I can not connect it to my home Wi-Fi network. Does anyone have the same issue?

Now I am able to connect the device to my Wi-Fi. the OS version is now 10.1.0.1485. I believe other people with the same device should have the same issue.

I had a bit of trouble getting mine setup and provisioned, but in the end it all worked, if you have Skype I can walk you through most of the problems.

Thanks for coming to the meetup last night. Did you like the presentation? Please leave your thoughts/comments here so the people that didn't make it can read what they missed! lol :-)

I received LOTS of followup interest and have already shipped 6 developer devices to people that have sent me their signed EULAs. If you want a BlackBerry 10 dev alpha device to test your apps, just email me: [masked] I've posted the slides I used last night here: http://www.slideshare.net/lmcdunna

The promo code to waive the BBLive/BB Jam Americas event (next week in Orlando, FL) is: CWGX66

For regular updates about development on BlackBerry, you can follow me on twitter: @LMcDunna Lastly, one person stayed afterward and took me up on the offer to have me port his app. It took longer to copy it from his machine to mine than it did to see it running on my BlackBerry Z10. It was a personal finance app with lots of graphics, and it worked beautifully!

A couple of people asked me about Carrier Billing, so I added a slide to my deck which I think makes the case for why this is SO important. Check it out. Link to my slideshare is above

Thanks Larry for presenting, the app indeed worked pretty well, and with a few small tweaks I'm sure it would pass all the compatibility tests. Low barriers to entry to get your name out there on a new platform is always worth looking at.

Larry showed us the unique features of the new Blackberry phone. More importantly, as Android developers, we can port our Android app to the new Blackberry phone very easily. I believe this will attract a lot of Android developers.
