Issue over the commercial use and enforcement of Intellectual Property is one of the fastest-growing legal matters in the U.S. and abroad. Particularly for the Healthcare Industry, because of the advancements in the fields of medical device, pharmaceutical, eHealth, and mHealth, there has been an explosion of ideas and digital contents. This panel seminar aims to begin the conversation for healthcare professionals around how to protect these ideas and digital contents, and how to best monetize based on IP.

Shih-Yo Shawn Cheng, Perkins Coie LLP

 

Shawn Cheng is an Intellectual Property attorney, adviser, and strategist. Shawn Cheng has extensive experience working with high-tech clients in the legal areas of utility and design patent procurement, trademark procurement, IP portfolio management, IP related business intelligence, strategic patent counseling, technology transactions, reexaminations, infringement, non-infringement, and invalidity opinions. Shawn Cheng is also an experienced practitioner of alternative dispute resolution including mediation. 

Shawn has extensive technical and legal experience in understanding, applying, and analyzing social/local/mobile software, enterprise software, web crawling technology, 3D graphics, machine learning, data structure, networking technology, navigation technology, lighting systems, optics, mobile devices, peripheral devices, TV and displays, semiconductor fabrication, semiconductor packaging, data storage, medical devices, electronic materials, memory metal, IC circuits, embedded systems, e-commerce, consumer electronics, and lithography and design automation.


William C. Revelos, Esq., Principal at Insight Legal

 

Bill Revelos is a patent attorney with 17 years’ experience in the medical device field.  After spending several years in private practice, including specializing in patent prosecution for medical device companies while an associate with Morrison & Foerster in Palo Alto, CA, he served as General Counsel with TriVascular, Inc.  He became Senior Patent Counsel at Boston Scientific responsible for all intellectual property matters for two of its franchises after Boston acquired TriVascular in 2005.  He was most recently General Counsel with Zeltiq Aesthetics, Inc.  Bill currently owns Insight Legal Services, a consulting practice under which he provides intellectual property and other legal counseling for a number of clients and acts as outside in-house counsel to companies in the medical device sector.


Jack Lin, Patent counsel at Varian

 

As Corporate Counsel and Patent Program Manager at Varian Medical Systems (VMS), a Fortune 1000 medical device company, Jack has a primary role to manage and develop the global patent portfolio for VMS.  Jack currently oversees all matters relating to patent procurement and maintaining a portfolio that includes approximately 350 issued patents and 400 active U.S. and international applications. The portfolio covers software and hardware related to precision radiation therapy instruments, x-ray tube, digital x-ray detector, proton therapy instruments, imaging processing algorithms, treatment planning software, and particle acceleration.

As part of developing a comprehensive patent portfolio, Jack is embedded in the product development cycle and am experienced in spotting legal issues that may be encountered during development cycle.  Jack also spearheads many projects such as inbound and outbound licensing evaluation, freedom to operate analysis, and patent enforcement analysis.


Rajiv Sarathy, Partner at Perkins Coie

 

Rajiv Sarathy is a patent attorney who applies his 13 years of software industry experience—including 9 years as a software development engineer and manager at Microsoft Corporation—and his MBA education to counsel companies on intellectual property (IP) matters. Although Rajiv is a software patent attorney based in Seattle, WA, he counsels clients throughout the United States, Canada, India, and in other countries. Rajiv focuses his practice on patent procurement, infringement and validity analysis, IP Transfers, IP licensing, IP counseling, and IP dispute management. Rajiv has also assisted clients with reexaminations, Section 337 actions at the International Trade Commission (ITC), and other enforcement activities; and has assisted companies to analyze and transfer large portfolios of patent assets.  Before joining Microsoft, Rajiv developed software for several medical researchers and hospitals.  Rajiv's wife is a practicing anesthesiologist.
