The August topic is SpockProxy by Frank Flynn of Spock.com. In his own words:
I [will] talk about the "Spockproxy" which is our version of the MySQL proxy (a fork off of their code). We built this to shard our database.
In a nutshell Spockproxy:
-is available at Sourceforge (code and more documentations there)
-does not use (or support) Lua -- the sharding config info is read from a database at startup
-only does connection pooling and sharding.
-is live now (we use it for Spock.com)
The talk is useful for anyone considering sharding; it doesn't matter if you use Spockproxy or any other solution because I go over all the issues we came across (and our solutions - which you may or may not choose to use) such as:
-how do you choose a sharding key
-what do you do with universal data (data which must be referenced across shards)
-bulk loading (why we don't use the proxy for bulk loading)
This Meetup will be held at Sun's Menlo Park campus in their Executive Briefing Center, Building 15. Enter the Sun campus and turn right on Network Circle. Follow the signs to Executive Briefing Center in Building 15.
