Swift London | One

This is our first major meetup since the opening meeting. Welcome! Things are developing fast, and as part of our step-by-step rollout, this month we are launching the first track of a regular two track series of events. The second track will be launching in early August, RSVPs open now.

As we build up steam, other events will follow.

Swift London | One

The first track is a monthly series of short presentations on Swift - one by a member of the group, one by a guest speaker - followed by a good chunk of time for questions and discussion. The two topics will be distinct, one with a practical focus, one with a broader scope.

Swift London | Hands On

Our second monthly track will launch two weeks after, on Tuesday 5 August, and will be much more hands on. It will include workshops, study groups, pair programming, and group projects. The two tracks will be complimentary: things learnt in one can be practiced and played with in the other. You can reserve a place now.

Monday 21 July

Guest speaker: Anthony Levings

Syntax and Symbols: The first hurdles to mastering Swift

Drawing on his own experiences, as well as common difficulties surfacing on Twitter, StackOverflow, and the like, Anthony will be giving a cautionary guided tour of optionals, passing closures, and other major new features of Swift. Handy for those coming fresh to iOS development, with some added emphasis for those transitioning from Objective-C.

Group speaker: Roger Domenech

Making noise in the playground: Scene Kit for the casual coder.

An introduction to Xcode's Playground, with a practical focus on Scene Kit. A mixture of tool demonstration, basic Playground setup, Xcode integration, Scene Kit 3D object creation and custom shader use, with a little room for surprises (or Xcode crashes).

As per usual, the event proper will start at 6.30pm, but we have the room from 6pm so please feel free to come down before and grab a cup of tea or coffee, say hello to each other. If you'd like to stay on after, from 8pm we will be decamping to The Slaughtered Lamb | 34-35 Great Sutton Street | Route map

The event is held at Skills Matter |[masked] Goswell Road | Map. We ask that after registering your attendance here, you take a moment to sign in as attending on their event page.

I'm glad. Hard to judge where the sweet stop is, but what better way than to keep trying?

OK, so here's the slides -https://www.icloud.com/iw/#keynote/BALnKZFgjI9YdpiYBjqBQ7F0a0-ok9wV3rGF/SwiftLondon_SketchyTech_Presentation

It doesn't appear possible to download them at the moment, only view online, but having tested it previously I think there might be a lag between going live on iCloud and the download arrow appearing.

It looks like a lot of slides but actually I've been lazy with animations and just created new slides in order to allow me to step through the code, so not every slide is new text, it's mainly the moving up and down of a highlighting box.

I look forward to meeting you all and hope that it's a great evening for everyone.

My current plan is to share a link to the slides on iCloud just before the event. Please check back here on Monday for details.

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
