Wimbledon Common Meet

  • Wimbledon Windmill & Museum

    Windmill Road, London SW19 (map)

    51.432484 -0.232959

  • Look for me/other people with binoculars and/or tripods, hopefully we'll be the only group around; call John on[masked] if you can't find us or v.late
  • Date is only tentative! I haven't even checked where/what phase the moon will be on this date. PLEASE CHECK DETAILS BEFOREHAND - and do comment + rsvp to show interest and make it happen (or it might not)!

After poor visibility cancelled previous Wimbledon event attempts last year, lets try again!

I'll try and remember to carry a printed out meetup logo with me and, though I don't know the area, I think we can meet by the windmill at the end of Windmill Road in Wimbledon - the meetup "map" link may not be reliable. Or as close as we can to that spot. The car park at the end of the road (next to the old Windmill) is believed to be closed in the evening, but hopefully we can meet down the road. IF there are problems getting down the road, we'll meet as near the "outside the common" end of Windmill road as feasible; CALL ME OR TEXT (so take my mobile no. from "how to find us" description of the meetup on the site) if you're stuck finding us, and we may have moved to a better viewing spot.

Strong recommendation no.1: wear warm clothes, hat and bring gloves (ideally ones you can still hold binoculars with). Standing around for a while, not moving much in this cold weather (and holding cold binoculars or adjusting 'scopes) is not fun unless you're wrapped up. Even a fold-up seat if you have one light/small enough to transport.

To help you get here, help copied from

By public transport the nearest stations are Wimbledon (District Line, Tram Link and main line trains) and Putney (main line) or East Putney (District Line). The stations are each about 1 1/2 miles from the windmill and the walk is up-hill but the 93 bus links Wimbledon and Putney town centres with a stop at Windmill Road.

The 93 bus runs from Putney Bridge Station, via Wimbledon and Morden to North Cheam.

Tramlink runs from Croydon to Wimbledon station with extensions to Beckenham, Elmers End and New Addington (though careful when dark, sometimes the smaller stops aren't so well lit or easy to find your way from/to).

I will arrive back from Georgia that day, and it's unlikely that I can make it.
