Meet on Streatham Common

Streatham Common is where we're holding our next meet, this Thursday 6th. We'll meet nearer the bottom of the common to start with, next to the A23 main road, and then shortly after walk up to the top of the common up the hill, so any latecomers should head there (and call my mobile if needed), but lets give it a go. It looks like being a sunny day and reasonably clear skies later - AND WE'RE STILL GO! So come along and chat, meet the others, learn, teach, see what we can see (a surprising amount in London, if you've never tried), and be inspired!

Sunset is at 7.35, so it'll start getting dark about half hour beyond that; but if you are bringing equipment that needs fiddling with, you might wish to be there nice and early so you can see.

The moon rises at 9.46, so if you want to stay a little later you'll see an almost-full moon a little after then (won't be very visible until its cleared the trees/horizon probably after 10pm). Before then we ought to see some of the brighter stars out, yes even in London with the naked eye - and with binoculars or better, quite a few more things. The moon will make it brighter so fewer stars visible if you hang around late enough, but is also good to look at craters and markings, and as many of you will be beginners its a good easy-to-find target.

I'll be bringing 2 pairs of binoculars, and my tripod.

If only 3 or 4 members are left rsvp'd for it I will move it to next week so people have more time to plan for it.

Getting there/finding us:

I will have a meetup logo with me, and my mobile no. is in the "how to find us" section on the website event details and in the email I sent out Wednesday. We'll meet up nearer the road to be easy to group up, look for a meetup logo on A4 paper and binoculars/tripod, then soon after be further up the hill of the common. Look for the group, call, or send an SMS if you arrive later and don't see us. I recommend bringing something warmer to wear too. Unsure when we'll be there til, I'll hang around while there's still any kind of group, that might be til after 10pm, or might be even later. Bad weather will truncate it but forecast looks good so far.

There is at least one bus stop at the common, nearest train station is either Streatham Common or Streatham (busses come past the common from both stations).

Please update your RSVP and only say Yes if you're definitely coming, you'll annoy us all if lots of yes rsvp's don't turn up; I'd rather re-arrange it when more can come instead if lots can't make it.

I thoroughly enjoyed it given I had always been mystified by this field.

I youre here and not yet found anyone, am just below treeline along the path with a couple of lights. Call me anyway! Have a low-power laser pointer I'm very occasionally waving round, and my tripod out.

I live on Wandsworth Common which allows me to arrive slightly fashionably late :-)

I'll be along soon. I'm just dealing with the politics between my cat and the one that arrived yesterday!

I am thinking about the usefulness of the meetup to me as I have not purchased any telescopic equipment yet.

Though I haven't looked out of one before to see if it's worth the investment - I'd only want to buy a good one.

If I can come would you be willing for me to see out of your telescope if you were on a break?

One of the joys of attending group viewings like this is the ability to find out what different equipment can do for your view. And to hear more about things and learn from others.

Further note - I only own a decent pair of binoculars and tripod myself, in fact I started off with a charity-shop pair I was lucky to find for £13, that weren't anything special at all - but they still helped! I see enough through scopes at the Baker Street Irregular meets I go to that I dont feel a huge need to buy one now, and we dont have much space to use it anyway, or much of a view; binoculars are much more practical for me

Certainly you can look through my telescope - after my first use last night I want every one to look through it and help me find things - I found finding the moon difficult!!!

My friends made fun of me so I didn't buy it in the end. In hindsight I do regret succumbing to the peer pressure.

What sort of finderscope do you have on it? I'm also looking forward to it. Remember its not likely to be a big turnout but there'll be a few of us. Early days!

Any days in particular that are good or bad? Thanks for updating your rsvp anyway, its good to see responses and that people are still interested.

I have today treated myself to a quite big 2nd hand Jessops telescope with tripod so I shall stand near paddling pool looking for you as it's too heavy to walk all way down then up the hill.

Hi all. I can do Wed, Thurs or Fri. Looking at hour by hour Tues looks cloudy anyway. Wed is clear during day - I suggest -if still clear in evening it might be good. Please see link below - it is pretty accurate.

Thanks Sharon. Like those ideas, though CP is heading towards the east of the area I hope this group to cover.

I would like to suggest The top of Streatham Common and for a future Meet, Crystal Palace - the highest hill in South London.

Yes, it was written ages ago. No, the meetup can still happen with almost no people - I had 3 people turn up to the very first group meet. Including me.. I've been busy getting married with 2 country's events over late last year/early this year, but trying to get the group back on track - wasn't very big when I last did much with it, now there's more folk.

    Suggestions for where?

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
