DESCRIPTION:
The real hit film of Sundance this year (it took out both jury and audience awards) was this stunning documentary about the French high-wire walker, Philippe Petit, and his death-defying stroll between the twin towers of the World Trade Centre in 1974. Assembling a small team of co-conspirators (including Australian director of Cane Toads, Mark Lewis) to plot the clandestine operation, Petit's career-high plays out like a heist movie, and director James Marsh's Bravura move is to structure his documentary in the same way. Working with original footage, interviews, reconstructions and photographs (including material of Petit's previous walks between the towers of Notre Dame and the Sydney Harbour Bridge), Marsh's film also pays discreet tribute to the architecture and significance of the towers themselves, monoliths that like Petit's awe-inspiring act, have now disappeared in time.
