AU Tax Time - Americans can save 2.5% of your gross income on overpaid medicare taxes

Nation,

It’s AU tax time and Americans can save 2.5% in overpaid Australian taxes. If you don't qualify for Medicare, you can get a refund for it.

I AM NOT A TAX PROFESSIONAL AND THIS SHOULDN’T BE CONSIDERED TAX ADVICE

Possibly the easiest saving...s on overpaid taxes is from medical levy exemption. Your employer automatically deducts 1.5% for a medicare levy and an extra surcharge 1% if you make ...more than ~$70k per year. However, if you were not entitled to medicare benefits (i.e. don’t have citizenship or PR in Australia, UK, or Italy) then you can claim this 1.5- 2.5% back.

If you forgot to do this for previous years, you can still claim it back.

You have to get a certificate from the Medicare Levy Exemption Certification Unit of Medicare Australia showing you were not entitled to Medicare benefits. You qualify for medicare and don’t qualify for the exemption if you have PR in any of the following countries: Australia, UK, Northern Ireland, Italy, Malta, Sweden, the Netherlands, Finland, or Norway.

Once you’ve applied for the certificate (even if you haven’t received it) you can indicate that you weren’t entitled to medicare in etax.

To get the certificate, fill out and scan this form and send it to [address removed]. (takes approximately 4 weeks to process, but you can file your taxes before receiving it back if you’re 100% sure it’ll be approved.)
