• Differences between linear and switching power supplies

• Main parts of a power supply

• Building a basic AC to DC linear power supply

FYI, for those occasions when you accidentally let out the magic blue smoke, there's a repair kit:

Exactly what I was hoping it would be. The teacher stepped through each component of a basic power supply, explained its role, how to identify it, what the ratings meant, etc.

I would definitely like to see more from this teacher. I'm ecstatic to have built a PS, and understood what I was doing the whole time. Cool cool.

In hindsight, I should have bought a few more of the motherboards from the instructor to experiment with at home. Anyone know if he sells them?

This was an excellent class from an excellent instructor. It was very "hands on." The instructor made everything easy to understand. I was very happy to see a class like this offered on a Saturday. It seems most classes happen at night during the week, and I can never attend those. Highly recommended and can't wait until the next one.

I'm in the process of making my own 4A solar cell charger for rechargeable devices, like my iPad. I figure the principles of making a regulated power supply are going to overlap with what I'll need to do in regulating the output from the array of solar cells. Considering it's been 36 years since I had electronics in HS, I feel like a newbie. I really need to re-learn this stuff. I'm looking forward to the class.

I went to the first round of this class. Javid did an excellent job explaining both the principles behind it and the practical decisions around the design of it.

So after this meetup, does that mean I will never needlessly throw away another out-of-warranty ATX PSU? :)

Are non-members allowed to attend or do I need to join first? Also, approximately how long is this class?

    • Bill T.

All of our classes are open to the public. The class is approximately 2.5 hours, but may go over on the Q&A afterwards.

Please bring your project. If it's relevant to the class, everyone can gain a benefit from seeing it.
