Welcome to the August 2012 Tai Chi School of Westchester Newsletter,

Healthy Backs Workshop, Part 2 (open to all).  Friday, September 28, 2012 at 6:00 p.m., $30.00 for new attendees and $20.00 for those who attended last year’s workshop (Part 1).  Many students begin their study of Tai Chi because of back pain, so it can be extremely helpful to examine what may be the underlying causes and to use some simple exercises to improve the condition in conjunction with Tai Chi practice.  This updated workshop provides additional exercises and teaches new techniques, many taken primarily from physical therapy** that help ease back pain and promote healing.  You will learn simple, relevant techniques which you can use in everyday activities and which, as a side benefit, will improve and enhance your Tai Chi training.  Learn how to achieve and maintain a healthy back, free yourself from pain and discomfort, and gain the optimum flexibility, strength, and functionality of a healthy back.  ** Sifu Colon is a retired licensed New York State Physical Therapist.

Topics include:

Exploring, in simple terms, the basic anatomy of your back

Five simple self-tests for identifying back problems

Based upon the results of those tests, exercises designed for maximum benefit

Common back problems and how to correct them

Easy exercises to help you regain and maintain a strong, healthy back

All participants will receive a free detailed, illustrated handout, which includes the newest exercises.

FREE Open House on Friday, September 14, 2012 at 6:00 p.m.  Students and friends of the School … guests … members of the community … those who have Tai Chi experience, and those who are interested in learning about Tai Chi … are all invited to join us at the School for a demonstration, information about the health benefits, science, art and martial applications of Tai Chi, Q&A, and some food and drink with Sifu Domingo Colon.  Please join us for a lovely evening and be sure to share the opportunity with someone who might be interested in enjoying a peaceful, fun evening of Tai Chi.  We look forward to seeing you there.

Stick Form Class begins Saturday, September 8, 2012 at 8:45 a.m., continuing every Saturday thereafter.

Completion of the Short or Long Form is required for attendance.  Participation in Stick Form will enhance your abilities, understanding, and experience of your other Tai Chi forms.  (Once through this Stick Form, the Two-Person Stick Form Set will be taught to reinforce and expand upon these techniques.)

Martial Applications, Sundays at 9:00 a.m., is an ongoing, non-sparring class.  Each week we explore the martial applications of a new move within the Short Form.  Whether you are looking for a deeper understanding of the elements of the form or expansive self-defense applications, this class provides new insights into your Tai Chi experience.

School is on Holiday from Friday, August 24 through Monday September 3, 2012, in honor of the Labor Day Weekend.  Classes resume on Tuesday, September 4, 2012 at 5:30 p.m.
