The Horror of Pop Culture Philosophy and Secret Santa

Fun Loving Thinkers:

I really feel sad that my philosophy section in book stores has been shrinking into the abyss of the desperately growing theology and new age sections in book stores.  Add to this these silly knock off books that have invaded the dwindling section along with the stores thinking that atheism is philosophy (or maybe the only place they think these books should be placed) and there is hardly any room left for new philosophy (which actually exists) and the classics most of us love.

December’s meet up will be participants picking one of the And Philosophy books from the list below and either research what is in the book (don’t encouraging anyone by buying one) or thinking originally on the pop culture notion depicted in the book and the Thinker’s own original fantasies they believe might be in there.  I would like everyone signing up choosing a topic from the list.  D'Ann, Anna and I will do our best ad lib funniness to make fun of you all trying to defend why the chosen book should pollute my philosophy shelf.

To assist your choice, I have a list below of the published ‘books’ to date to choose from.  Only one is reserved.  Brent has been awarded Bullshit and Philosophy by fiat.

We will be mixing in Secret Santa as well so you need to think about something cool and witty to wrap up for giving to The Unknown Philosopher of your un-choice.

Here is the list below from one of the publishers of these things.  Unbelievably I think there are four ‘entities’ putting out variants of these notions.  As a part time philosophy and film loony I simply ask ‘Is it safe?’

You can't make up how much fun this meet up was. I don't know if it was just the ambiance of the season or the wide open approach for everyone to just open up and talk, but everyone really got into the mood and it was so funny, funny, funny. We could have filmed this thing and sold tickets to watch the replay. I just want to thank everyone for the great times. Thinkers who didn't attend this really missed something special.

Dale: Ask, Believe, Receive. It's THAT simple!!! Of course, if, in the old days, you had taken EST and gotten IT, then you would already have known this. You can also find the same message in ANY capitalist apologetic, in Milton Friedman, say, or in Disney's "If you wish upon a star. . . ." Uh, Duh!!!

See what happens, Dale, when you allow the universe to "match the frequency of your thoughts and feelings"? If Anna and Igor will chip in, I'll get you The Course in Miracles, too.

In fairness, Dale, the book in question was Alice in Wonderland and Philosophy, and, of course, Lewis Carroll was a philosopher, so it's not quite Terrence and Phillip and Philosophy or the Sarah Palin Stump Speech and Philosophy. Come to think of it, perhaps I'll write you an essay on that last topic. Hmmm. . . . So, it is no secret now that Dale is getting, for Christmas, a copy of The Secret.

In defense of those, Bob S gave me one of those books on my birthday, and it's not bad. Quite funny, actually:)

I dunno, I think "Bullshit and Philosophy" sounds like a sacred text from the Church of the Blessed Excrement. Scat Rules! LOL
