Is There Really a War on Women?

Considering the popular topics of our times, one of the most interesting and troubling if it is true is the general contention that certain elements of our politics are waging what has been described as a ‘War on Women.’  From bringing to the forefront certain more contentious priorities from the Christian conservatives to questioning things that this country, along with the entire rest of the civilized world, felt had been settled ages ago, we appear to be suffering from many cases of Déjà Vu all over again.  For the May Thinker meeting we will have an open discussion on these topics and whether there is truly a war going on and what the point might be if there is one.

I just spent the first two days of the Sarasota Film Festival watching films that centered on the situations of woman in various parts of the world, what these courageous women were facing and where they would prefer things to go if things could be settled.   During this time I watched this HBO documentary on Gloria Steinem and the battles that she and her colleagues took on when I was in college.  It is so weird that while so many of these battles women of the world are facing appear to be moving forward, trends in this country may be in reverse.  Or are they?

One hopes that for this discussion we get as many women as men to attend.  We all know that philosophy has always been the most sexist of the social sciences.  Or is it?   Something else to consider!

Brent, I wish I had a helicopter so I could get from Indian Rocks Beach to Carrollwood during the 5 o'clock rush hour. So sorry to have let down my Sistahs & missed the fun. I trust they did us proud. ;)

We could have used you, Cher - and any other female representatives, as we had 11-3 males-females! On a topic aimed at women! Oh well, it was interesting nonetheless, but some of us guys would rather the women represent themselves...<G>

    The Campaign Against Women
The Republican assault on women’s rights and health is undeniable, severe and continuing.
