<![CDATA[Re: Stop the spam to our group.]]> https://www.meetup.com/tampa-bay-thinkers/messages/72432702/
Okay, a couple of things:

First, if you want to send things out to a group of members, without anyone knowing the e-mails of the people you are sending to, then use the "bcc" function like I did here. Tim & Jean, more people than you got this message - the entire list did (some of you may have received it twice).

Second, controlling which emails you get through Meetup can be controlled by the member by going into My Profile - Email and Notifications. You can literally stop any emails from anyone, or select those you want to get.

However, there is literally no way to stop people from emailing the entire group, other than banning them. We presume members will not use this for spam, and if they do, we can ban them - on an individual basis. In this case, [address removed] was most likely automatically added to an email list. I trust Tim will remove it and there should be no further problems.

Generally, true spammers join the group then leave as soon as they've spammed us, in fact it's usually done automatically by their program, so they don't get tons of responses. So while I would agree Meetup's system isn't the best, there's no other way a member can notify everyone in a timely fashion of changes, like a sudden change of location, etc.

I don't think you are understanding my requests. I do not want you, Tim, to email the entire Tampa Bay Thinker group. Period.
At all.
Especially not to advertise ridiculous things.
Again to the other administrators---- you need to learn how to say people from mass emailing the entire thinker group. That privilege should be for administrators only.
Members complain with all the crap that they get sent in their email box by other members.

We have an incredible deal and opportunity on a Caribbean Cruise and Class with Almine.
First of all the Caribbean Cruise deal is an opportunity that does not appear very often. The low cost of this 7 day Western Caribbean Cruise is due to the Carnival Pride going through a multi-million dollar make over and transferring to another port. It seems to have been hidden from access to passenger registration and is playing a catch up game.
Let’s play the game and take advantage of this amazing price for this journey. In order to participate you need to, Register for this cruise Before August 14, 2014 and pay a $250.00 deposit. You have until November 5, 2014 to pay the balance or cancel. You can cancel with a full refund of your deposit prior to November 5, 2014. If you have any desire to attend this Retreat and Cruise and would like to secure this amazing deal on this cruise you will need to take action as soon as possible. We are limited to a certain number of cabins at these prices. The Retreat/Class with Almine is a separate cost and registration for the retreat should be done through Spiritual Journeys main web site at www.spiritualjourneys.com by clicking on the retreat link and cruise retreat posting.
If you have someone joining you on the cruise and sharing your cabin you can begin your registration. If you need to be paired with another passenger for this cruise you can still begin registering and the travel agent will pair you with another Spiritual Journeys passenger with our assistance as best we can.
The following prices/quotes are the primary best deals and pricing. I can tell you from experience these prices are $200.00 to $350.00 lower than what you usually find for this level of 7 day Caribbean Cruises. Balcony Cabins/Staterooms and Suites are also an exceptional price right now, or at least and until the word gets out and this ship starts to fill. You will need to contact our cruise agency for Balcony and Suite pricing. The ship will fill fast at these prices and pricing will begin to increase soon! So please don’t delay if you are interested.

<![CDATA[Passing of Dale Friedley, a/k/a "The Dork"]]> https://www.meetup.com/tampa-bay-thinkers/messages/67661032/ All Thinkers:

I am sad to inform you that the Tampa Bay Thinkers group organizer and longtime leader, Dale Friedley a/k/a "The Dork", passed away March 31, 2014 after a long illness. Dale was well known for his active participation in many Bay Area free thinker organizations, and for his enjoyment of serious cinema.

We will all miss his presence, leadership, and sense of humor, but cherish our memories of the time we spent with him.

Let this be a time to share our thoughts and happy memories about Dale either on his FB Page or on the Thinkers Discussion Bulletin Board page setup for this purpose.

I am offering a brief talk (10 minutes) on solutions for corruption that will be videotaped for my class on public speaking. At the beginning of the speech, the camera will pan the audience to show the instructor that I do have an audience; that is the only time the audience will be on camera.

After the talk, if anyone is interested in hearing or discussing a more in depth explanation of predatory leadership, the umbrella hypothesis that describes the nature and mindset of the core contributors to humanity’s greatest problems, I will be happy to do so.

The talk will be given at 7:30 pm this coming Saturday at my home in Tampa Palms:

15916 Farringham Drive.
Tampa, 33647

Space is limited to about ten people. Please email your RSVP to me at [address removed]

<![CDATA[Moving topic to discussion board]]> https://www.meetup.com/tampa-bay-thinkers/messages/65567712/ I have received messages from several people suggesting this discussion be moved from the email list to the discussion board. I agree, and the topic is already there: Topic suggestions and wording. Please DO NOT RESPOND to any further messages via email; every time you respond you are encouraging people to keep emailing. Instead, copy and paste what you're responding to on the discussion board.

It has also come to my attention that some - but not all - email messages have been going to my JUNK folder. Moving to the discussion boards will avoid that for me and others, and thus make the discussions easier to follow.

I can't force members to do this, but I think it's in all our best interests to do so. I'll be posting my latest response there shortly.

Let's try to reserve the email list for announcement of things like time changes or location changes or being late/can't attend picnics etc. I'm sure most of the group, if not all, will appreciate it!

Jason,
We should probably move this over to a thread in the discussion area.
Do you consider not believing in something, or challenging the validity of ab idea==== to be same thing as "vilifying" it? Really?
This IS a group that DOES discuss, debate, and sometimes debunk topics. NOT everyone actually Enjoys having what They believe challenged or questioned or====dawg forbid!! Disagreed with??!!

As in ===// If you don't agree with My way of looking at the world , that equates to " vilifying" it. "//

We actually are sort of a discussion and debate group. It's what we do. If You dislike having what you say questioned or even disagreed with!!!?? (Gasp) then you might not particularly "enjoy" debating.
If if if you are replying to my note below (?) I'm surprised you did not seem to notice I did say there IS a (limited) use for placebo based therapies for some people.

But I just strongly dislike pretending it is something other than what it is== the placebo effect. No one is having their "energy" moved around. We do NOT have to dismiss science and physics and make up crap
to admire the wonder of the placebo effect.

Why not celebrate and explore the (limited) power of placebo itself( without the need to rename it, re·categorize it, or make up stuff?)

I agree with your disappointment that so many people do try to assign metaphysical properties to things they do not understand. I disagree with your characterization of those who realize it IS the placebo effect, as "less educated".(?).
//"I will not argue"// Me, i'll question anything and everything especially if the idea is irrational or breaking the laws of nature.
I'm very happy to an attack an idea but never the Person.
You make see this kind of challenging as "arguing".... What I will happily challenge and take on and explore IN A "DEBATE" GROUP is different than what I do at the Thanksgiving table.

But~~~Like I said, folks who really dislike it to the point that it feels like they're being "vilified"
may not much care for debate, but they're welcome to come find out as long as interest and what the gruop is about. Most of us strive to be polite people but I can't promise that you won't be challenged or disagreed with.
And there are ideas I actually will strongly disagree with, which may qualify as " villify" in your book.
Is that a bad thing to think differently than you do, or to require evidence to accept a Very far fetched idea? ( or to realize that there already IS evidence that this EFT is just the placebo effect)

//" fantastical claims require fantastic evidence."//
We should probably move this over to a thread in the discussion area!!!!!! Feel free to start a thread in the member discussion area to continue explaining your feelings about people who call the placebo effect·· "the placebo effect"'.

Wow, what an interesting response from folks. I consider myself very much a critical thinker, and a scientist. It is the nature of my work that many who do operate from a more metaphysical ("woo-hoo") bent find their way to me (as a hypnotherapist)-the reasons have everything to do with the human tendency (and history) to mystify (or vilify) things that they do not yet have an explanation for. I think we get closer to understanding the true nature of the human neurology everyday; it is both amazingly creative AND very predictable. As a rational thinker, I will not "throw the baby out with the bathwater"-if some knowledge is useful, I want to understand WHY and how useful is it?

I too find it discouraging, and a real dis-service to people who are in pain, that so many people tie any religious/metaphysical explanations to things like EFT. This is no more appropriate than to do so with EMDR ( an evidence based therapy for trauma) or any other approach. It is a technique that people can use, on their own, to di-fuse strong emotional reactivity that they have to certain stimuli. When the content is defused from the emotion, it is moved from the emotional centers of the brain (which often triggers the physiological stress response) to the pre-frontal cortex, allowing a more rational response. There are many ways to do this, EFT is but one, and what makes it cool is its simplicity, even young children can use it. Its simplicity though, is a part of the reason EFT remains in the domain of less critical thinkers, people willing to keep it in the "woo-hoo" arena because they lack the education/awareness of the neurology that is at work.

Now, I did not develop this process, do not consider myself an expert at it (again-it is JUST one therapeutic tool in my arsenal), have no monetary incentives, really have no reason to convince anyone of anything here. I would be open to sharing my experiences and thoughts but I really will not argue.

Then I am happy to discuss the topic " the placebo effect"
But I dislike the fakery that is involved pretending we are discussing how someone is"moving your chakras around" :-)
or Whatevvvvver is current curtain for the emperor's clothes.....for seeing (or feeling) what we are told.

Call it what it is and we'll be happy to talk about it. Or at least I will.
Placebos do work on many people for "some" problems (as does distraction :-) :-) :-)
)
but it very much depends How the placebos are presented....to help with "subjectively reported" problems.(pain, nausea, etc)

I know cuz I have passed placebos manymany times. They used to be legal. Now ya, have, to call or something else (like lavender oil)

I have been able to induce dizziness in people by telling them to this particular med (placebo) is so powerful that you might feel a small wave of dizziness. Shocking how many did report that they were dizzy!!!!!

Placebos can help some people with Subjectively Reported help..... Placebos do not shrink tumors or increase blood counts. But attitude Is about 80% of how ya feel, imo. There is a difference between actual "healing"
And what a person is "feeling".
That's two different things.
I am open to discuss the placebo effect~~~~ BUT let's call it what it is okay??

You/They phoo-phoo it but doesn't it really serve to prove that the brain can many times heal us without actual medicine, and merely just the idea of it? Its not merely that a placebo works "because you think it does", it has to do with belief, trust, people's trust in authority figures (like doctors), and an apparently twisted lack of trust in their own abilities in that it takes the individual being deceived in order to empower them to heal themselves - secretly, behind their own backs, so to speak. I find it so odd that people don't find the placebo effect a giant elephant in the room, flying in the face of the skeptical POV, even as those same skeptics love to throw it into their own arguments. Skeptics wave it off as just something the brain does, ho-hum - and yet thats EXACTLY how powerful the brain is - it can heal you through belief alone! No real medicine required.

Chiropractic does some things to some people, but also kills and paralyzes people, and doesn't cure anything. Voodoo and placebos work the same way: because you think it does. Much better on things that can't be measured. No broken bones have been magically healed by any of these woo techniques.

During a typical EFT session, the person will focus on a specific issue while tapping on "end points of the body's energy meridians". EFT works on any problem. I have never seen it fail and am always amazed at how well it works on any problem.

<![CDATA[Re: [tampa-bay-thinkers] demonstration of EFT?]]> https://www.meetup.com/tampa-bay-thinkers/messages/65540512/ The placebo effect DOES work. Not on broken bones, of course, but most of our illnesses have a certain level of psychosomatic basis to them - headaches, stomachaches, backaches etc. are worsened, or even caused, by tension and stress. Placebos are the best treatment for this if they are safe and free some dangerous side effects. I have a counselor working with me who offers a placebo treatment called Jin Shin Jytsu. Sure its clearly placebo, but that damn thing relieves pain and works better than most pain pills.

Jason,

We JUST discussed "the placebo effect" last month, or maybe it was the month before? I am very open to discussing the placebo effect==== but let's call the topic : "the placebo effect."

Placebos do work on many people for "some" problems (as does distraction :-) :-) :-)
)
but it very much depends How the placebos are presented....to help with "subjectively reported" problems.(pain, nausea, etc)

It appears that the reason eft is called (emotional freedom technique) is that while it can work on other issues than emotional, when an issue cannot find solution that makes it an emotional issue even if it was a sore shoulder or any other problem. EFT works on any problem. I have never seen it fail and am always amazed at how well it works on any problem.

The people who participate in the demo will be happy that they were there for a cure and for those who like myself like to be "helping people" will be happy to learn a quick technique for helping.

Placebos do work on many people for "some" problems (as does distraction :-) :-) :-)
)
but it very much depends How the placebos are presented....to help with "subjectively reported" problems.(pain, nausea, etc)

Obviously you don't really understand the placebo effect. Think of it like LSD: it makes you believe you can fly, until you jump off the cliff. Then you die.

When you find someone who's been able to grow a leg back, or dissolve a kidney stone, through the placebo effect, let me know. Until then, there's nothing interesting about watching someone pretend to heal someone by tapping on them.

Some people are not familiar with EFT: I am quite familiar with it and would like to make a statement for the group.

<![CDATA[RE: [tampa-bay-thinkers] demonstration of EFT?]]> https://www.meetup.com/tampa-bay-thinkers/messages/65536422/

Praying does not help, really when emergency is eminent we have three choices: Stay put and die and the other two is either go to church to be healed or go to the hospital to get well if possible (think of a heart attack).

“Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able?
Then he is not omnipotent.
Is he able, but not willing?
Then he is malevolent.
Is he both able and willing?
Then whence cometh evil?
Is he neither able nor willing?
Then why call him God?”

So when enough people are conned into believing it, the world will again be flat? Massages work - as massages. Chiropractic does some things to some people, but also kills and paralyzes people, and doesn't cure anything. Voodoo and placebos work the same way: because you think it does. Much better on things that can't be measured. No broken bones have been magically healed by any of these woo techniques.

Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFTs) are a form of counseling intervention that draws on various theories of alternative medicine including acupunctureneuro-linguistic programming, energy medicine, and Thought Field Therapy. It is best known through Gary Craig's EFT Handbook, published in the late 1990s, and related books and workshops by a variety of teachers. During a typical EFT session, the person will focus on a specific issue while tapping on "end points of the body's energy meridians". Advocates claim that the technique may be used to treat a wide variety of physical and psychological disorders, and as a simple form of self-administered therapy.[1]

The available evidence from studies done on EFT have shown that while there may be small effects from use of this technique, they are likely due to well recognized conventional psychological techniques often used with the tapping, rather than the purported "energy" mechanisms. EFT is generally characterized as pseudoscience and has not garnered significant support in clinical psychology.

Some people are not familiar with EFT: I am quite familiar with it and would like to make a statement for the group.
I believe that it was Einstein who said that "things should be as simple as possible"
"but not not simpler" The people who wouldn't give it a chance to work felt that it was too simple. Actually the more simple the technique, the faster it can work. I have seen and done many 2 minute cures. No credit to me, People heal themselves when they allow it to happen. When this gets setup - up as a topic I will be happy to demonstrate it. The people who participate in the demo will be happy that they were there for a cure and for those who like myself like to be "helping people" will be happy to learn a quick technique for helping.

<![CDATA[Re: [tampa-bay-thinkers] demonstration of EFT?]]> https://www.meetup.com/tampa-bay-thinkers/messages/65533732/ Wow, what an interesting response from folks.

Placebos do work on many people for "some" problems (as does distraction :-) :-) :-)
)
but it very much depends How the placebos are presented....to help with "subjectively reported" problems.(pain, nausea, etc)

<![CDATA[RE: [tampa-bay-thinkers] demonstration of EFT?]]> https://www.meetup.com/tampa-bay-thinkers/messages/65527712/ We JUST discussed "the placebo effect" last month, or maybe it was the month before? I am very open to discussing the placebo effect==== but let's call the topic : "the placebo effect."
:-)
Then I am happy to discuss the topic " the placebo effect"
But I dislike the fakery that is involved pretending we are discussing how someone is"moving your chakras around" :-)
or Whatevvvvver is current curtain for the emperor's clothes.....for seeing (or feeling) what we are told.

Call it what it is and we'll be happy to talk about it. Or at least I will.
Placebos do work on many people for "some" problems (as does distraction :-) :-) :-)
)
but it very much depends How the placebos are presented....to help with "subjectively reported" problems.(pain, nausea, etc)

During a typical EFT session, the person will focus on a specific issue while tapping on "end points of the body's energy meridians". Advocates claim that the technique may be used to treat a wide variety of physical and psychological disorders, and as a simple form of self-administered therapy.[1]

Although I agree with much of the article, many of us DO get just as
upset and actively debunk the anti-science/Whole Foods/natural=healthy
woo. But as of yet, Whole Foods and other purveyors of that brand of
snake oil don't get tax-free properties or force it into public school
classrooms - though they are trying for the latter at least. Still, as
yet I can still choose my grocery store, and have never been into the
nearby Whole Foods store, and don't plan on it. They get none of my
money, but I'm forced to subsidize churches. See the difference?

Obviously you don't really understand the placebo effect. Think of it like LSD: it makes you believe you can fly, until you jump off the cliff. Then you die.

When you find someone who's been able to grow a leg back, or dissolve a kidney stone, through the placebo effect, let me know. Until then, there's nothing interesting about watching someone pretend to heal someone by tapping on them.

So when enough people are conned into believing it, the world will again be flat? Massages work - as massages. Chiropractic does some things to some people, but also kills and paralyzes people, and doesn't cure anything. Voodoo and placebos work the same way: because you think it does.

So why wouldn't you find the placebo effect infinitely interesting? A scientifically verified phenomenon that Science hasn't a clue to the actual mechanics of.

I'm well "aware" of the varieties of woo out there, as well as the adaptable nature of pseudoscience and scam artists. There's always a new scam to be investigated. However, I don't have unlimited time to spend watching "demonstrations" of things that have already been exposed. That's like insisting on sticking your hand in the fire, even though you've been told by dozens of reliable sources that it burns!

I don't call that thinking. I don't call people who fall for such scams thinkers. I'll be nice enough to leave it to your imagination what I do call them. If the majority of the group wants to spend time watching palm or tarot or tea leaf readings, or listen to someone extol the wonders of psychic healers or snake handlers, I won't stand in your way, but I won't be attending. My time is better spent arranging my sock drawer or watching funny cat videos!

I like thinking about everything. It is what I think makes me aware of something else to think about and be aware of inatead of being limited and unaware. It may be beneficial or even non beneficial ideas, products, circumstances, and so much more. If it exists be it known or unknown, awareness seems very beneficial.

I like thinking about everything. It is what I think makes me aware of something else to think about and be aware of inatead of being limited and unaware. It may be beneficial or even non beneficial ideas, products, circumstances, and so much more. If it exists be it known or unknown, awareness seems very beneficial.

<![CDATA[Re: [tampa-bay-thinkers] demonstration of EFT?]]> https://www.meetup.com/tampa-bay-thinkers/messages/65496762/ I'm very skeptical with regards to EFT/TFT, however I enjoy the posts for two reasons.

One reason is that I've never heard of either before and the emails prompted me to look into something
I was unaware of before. That's always a good thing.

Second, even though it may be a "bogus" science, it very well may not be. From what I've researched on my
own, I would say I would be leaning towards Tamara's assessment.

A lot of things are dismissed as junk science until they're not.

At first I was skeptical of NLP, but over time I see it's validity.

It's important to assess things with an open mind and not to let external biases, to include a concepts
own "marketing or promotional" bias to influence your own evaluation.

Finally, I don't think EFT is "central" of anything other than a topic opened up for discussion and exploration.

What should be central to a thinkers group is not to dismiss any idea offered in earnest, out of hand without first
doing one's on due diligence on the idea first.

Just my two cents.
