Again this year, the Tampa 9/12 will be bringing the classic All-American summer picnic indoors (to avoid the Florida heat, humidity, thunderstorms, and bugs!): Red and white checkered table clothes, hamburgers and hotdogs on the grill, macaroni and potato salad, baked beans, lemonade, ice tea, a galvanized tub of ice-cold Coca-Cola (in glass bottles!), desserts of all sorts, and watermelon (on the rind with seeds!) will all be on hand.
We will have a live auction (read "fundraiser") of a bottle of wine directly from Thomas Jefferson's Monticello, and a watermelon seed spitting contest. (Hopefully the art has not been completely lost with the advent of seedless watermelons!) We'll have giant Jenga and Checkers games too, so PLEASE bring the kids and grandkids!
Speaking of Mr. Jefferson, we have confirmation that the primary author of The Declaration of Independence will again favor us with his attendance this year. Putting aside his discomfort with public speaking, he has agreed to a town hall style Q&A with the assembled picnickers. And should the audience like, he will do a reading of The Declaration.
And to finish-off the afternoon, we will have an indoor "fireworks" display that you won't want to miss!
Also, the Independence Day Indoor Picnic will be the first exposition of a handmade quilt by our own Joan Garcia. It is the George Washington Positioning Flag. She has graciously donated this beautiful quilt as a means of fundraising for the Tampa 9/12 Patriot Camp which will be held the week of July 28th. Glenn Beck is offering the quilt kit for $200. We will be selling raffle tickets for $5 beginning at the picnic. (Winner will be picked at a later date.)
This is a free event, but we'd like everyone to bring a side dish. If the A thru G folks would bring potato chips or something salty, H thru P bring macaroni/potato salad, coleslaw, baked beans or some such thing, and the Q thru Z's bring a green or fruit salad. (FYI- Mr. Jefferson was quite fond of macaroni & cheese, so if you'd like to make an impression on the gentleman from Virginia....)
Also, we'll be doing a dessert contest - "Best in Taste" and "Best in Appearance". If you'd like to compete, please bring a dessert in lieu of a side dish.
So gather-up the kids, grandkids, friends, and neighbors... join us on Independence Day to celebrate the birth of a truly great Nation with good food and good friends... without the heat, humidity, and thunderstorms.
Please RSVP so we'll have enough burgers, dogs, and Cokes!
