2nd Annual TAMPA 9/12 INDEPENDENCE DAY INDOOR PICNIC

  • Jul 4, 2014 · 12:30 PM
  • American Legion: USS Tampa Post No 5

Again this year, the Tampa 9/12 will be bringing the classic All-American summer picnic indoors (to avoid the Florida heat, humidity, thunderstorms, and bugs!): Red and white checkered table clothes, hamburgers and hotdogs on the grill, macaroni and potato salad, baked beans, lemonade, ice tea, a galvanized tub of ice-cold Coca-Cola (in glass bottles!), desserts of all sorts, and watermelon (on the rind with seeds!) will all be on hand.

We will have a live auction (read "fundraiser") of a bottle of wine directly from Thomas Jefferson's Monticello, and a watermelon seed spitting contest.  (Hopefully the art has not been completely lost with the advent of seedless watermelons!)  We'll have giant Jenga and Checkers games too, so PLEASE bring the kids and grandkids!

Speaking of Mr. Jefferson, we have confirmation that the primary author of The Declaration of Independence will again favor us with his attendance this year. Putting aside his discomfort with public speaking, he has agreed to a town hall style Q&A with the assembled picnickers.  And should the audience like, he will do a reading of The Declaration.

And to finish-off the afternoon, we will have an indoor "fireworks" display that you won't want to miss!

Also, the Independence Day Indoor Picnic will be the first exposition of a handmade quilt by our own Joan Garcia.  It is the George Washington Positioning Flag. She has graciously donated this beautiful quilt as a means of fundraising for the Tampa 9/12 Patriot Camp which will be held the week of July 28th.  Glenn Beck is offering the quilt kit for $200.  We will be selling raffle tickets for $5 beginning at the picnic.  (Winner will be picked at a later date.)

This is a free event, but we'd like everyone to bring a side dish.  If the A thru G folks would bring potato chips or something salty, H thru P bring macaroni/potato salad, coleslaw, baked beans or some such thing, and the Q thru Z's bring a green or fruit salad. (FYI- Mr. Jefferson was quite fond of macaroni & cheese, so if you'd like to make an impression on the gentleman from Virginia....)

Also, we'll be doing a dessert contest - "Best in Taste" and "Best in Appearance".  If you'd like to compete, please bring a dessert in lieu of a side dish.

So gather-up the kids, grandkids, friends, and neighbors... join us on Independence Day to celebrate the birth of a truly great Nation with good food and good friends... without the heat, humidity, and thunderstorms.

Please RSVP so we'll have enough burgers, dogs, and Cokes!

A very thrilling afternoon for my granddaughter, Jena. She met Thomas Jefferson and George Washington. Oh, the thrill I saw in her face. She immediately took out her tablet and started shooting pictures. Jena also did well in the watermelon spitting contest for her size... 15 feet! Jena was excited and helped with the firecrackers. We will be attending the Patriot Camp this summer. Everyone is to be congratulated for the wonderful job you did with this event. I will attend all my Fourth of Julys with Tampa 912 and its good people. Next year I will try to be involved with the execution of this wonderful event. Thank you for a wonderful Fourth of July.

Sheila- Be sure to tell Jena how pleased Mr. Jefferson was to meet her, how impressed he was with that magical computer box device she had, and that he's very much looking forward to seeing her at Patriot Camp!

Thanks so much to everyone for coming out to the picnic. Hope everyone had a great time. And thank you so much to everyone who helped with set-up and clean-up. (Maybe a big tarp might be in order next year to catch all the fireworks!)

The Patriotic marching music that Karen provided kept us marching in step until clean-up was all done. It was fun!

Good to see everyone. FOX used the video of our party and aired it regarding the IRS corruption news on the 6PM news. It looked good for 'we the people' and bad for big government. Good interview sounds bites with Tim, Mark (TJ) and Ed. Good work everyone.

Last year while we were eating some kids were allowed to play what THEY call music. I agree only Patriotic music should be played.

I wondered about that myself, Kathy.

We missed you guys too. There is a high possibility that that will happen, but won't know until April of next year. You guys have a great time and keep Mark and Tim under control. I know its a hard job, but someone has to do it.

Dennis!- We missed you and Mary Jo last year as well! If you're going to be out of town again next year, we'll do the picnic on JUNE 4th!
