Hey, everyone, I'm sorry for the last minute notice, but I'm not going to be able to make it tonight. I had some sudden family-related stuff come up (nothing serious, just scheduling/childcare conflicts) that will keep me tied down most of the evening.
I don't know how far along everyone is with character creation, but if you still end up getting together, it might be a good idea to hammer out character details with one another. I'll put up a few more posts here with some setting details that I was planning to share tonight. If you want to ask me anything about the game, you can text me at[masked]-0436.
I'm sorry to do this to everyone and I don't expect it to be a regular occurrence.
I was planning to have you all come from the same town (located in the southeastern foothills of the Tylon Mountains north of the Tylon River). The town (called New Dawn) was founded about a century ago by the survivors from several kaers in the nearby mountains, which lent it a fairly diverse population.
Outside of making sure that your character is from this town, you’ve got a fair amount of latitude in developing your backstory. Maybe your family has been here for generations or maybe you were actually born in one of most recently opened kaers. Your family’s social status will probably be at least somewhat connected to how long ago your kaer opened. People from recently opened kaers tend to be on the lower end of the social status spectrum, while the most influential families generally come from the first few kaers that opened.
Your characters don’t have to know each other personally, but it’s a small town so you should probably at least be familiar with who everyone is (the whole “oh, that’s so and so’s cousin” social network). Remember that Earthdawn doesn’t have alignment, so you don’t need to clearly conceptualize your character as good or evil, lawful or chaotic. Having said that, I’d rather not deal with any backstabbing sociopaths or murderous psychopaths.
One final request: please don’t make your character androgynous. I dislike arbitrary gender norms as much as the next liberal, but I don’t want to have to figure out whether the NPC should treat your character like a man or a woman in every single social encounter. I’ve dealt with it in the past and it always ends up with me forgetting that detail at least once a session. I could be an asshole and treat it like the disadvantage that it would be in a socially conservative medieval society, but that won’t make anyone happy.
Don't have to worry about the sex of my character, while any race that's not familiar with Elves might not recognize that he's a male, anyone who is familiar with Elves will know if right off the bat. He'll tends to be sure of himself and somewhat aggressive, (alpha male mentality), from his closeness to the animal kingdom. Not that he'll be causing issues with humanoids, but he definitely projects that vibe especially around animals.
I know this is kind of late, but what characters have already been made? I'd like to help make a well-rounded group, and I'd like to have an idea for a new character beforehand.

Let me see if I can remember this off the top of my head:
Elf Beastmaster, Elf Illusionist, Dwarf Weaponsmith, Troll Warrior, Obsidiman Troubadour, and Elf Archer.
Earthdawn characters tend to be hardier and a bit more versatile than D&D characters, so group balance isn't quite as pressing of an issue. There's no dedicated healing class and none of the magic-user classes have the sort of "glass cannon" spells you typically see in fantasy RPGs.
That character list sounds right Ben!
Also, what edition do you play? I might be able to get the player manual.

We're playing 3rd edition.

Sorry for dragging my feet on getting the Player's Manual to you guys. There's a link on the forum. You can also email me directly and I'll send it to you.
I still need to finish my character i didn't get the pdf. If someone can put it on dropbox it would be a great help

Who is the GM? I'd really like to be prepared before starting, but I've never played this game before.
Ben is our GM. I'm sure he'll let you know what you need to do.
Our GM will have to answer that question Red.
I could go to this, and I have one other person who could go too, if you have room. Is it possible to come in maybe an hour early to get acquainted with the system and roll characters?
