How long have you been playing ukulele?

I have played ukulele off and on for three years now. I would say I am stalled at this point. Not having a group to play with in FL has had a deleterious effect on me; I don't pick up the uke for weeks on end. I am hoping that connecting with your society will motivate me to practice and continue learning techniques and music just because I have someone to play with and want to play well. I belong to a group called Silver Strummers in Dover, NH in summers. We meet once a week to play and practice and we perform for small groups occasionally. I must admit I practice then.

Do you have any particular songs or styles of music you like to play?

I like upbeat music and contrarily, blues. A favorite song is San Francisco Bay Blues, a song which is kind of both. In NH due to the age group we play a lot of 20s, 30s, and 40s songs. Gerry has begun to expand to the 50s rock, which is fun as we all know these songs. I am also a fan of bluegrass. I like all kinds of music really.

Do you play other musical instruments? If so, which ones?

I play a very little the keyboard and began on the guitar this past summer. I will probably concentrate on one, the ukulele, to play WELL.

Would you like to sing a few songs of your choosing in an informal group setting?

Yes, if others play and sing as well. I am more secure in a group and I like to harmonize, my natural proclivity, so I need others to sing the melody.

Are you interested in group lessons? If so, what do you want to learn about?

Yes, yes, and yes. Fingering and chording techniques. Some chords are extremely difficult or impossible for me to achieve and certain strumming techniques are difficult. It would help if I could work with someone who does them well. I would also like to have in my repretoire common chord progressions so when I go to a jam I can follow along with reasonable accuracy as long as I know the key. Currently I need the chords written above the words to know what to play. Without that notation, my ear knows when I am wrong, but doesn't know where to go.

Introduction

I am 69 years young, 2 kids, 3 grandkids, and one new great granddaughter. I enjoy gardening, reading, embroidery and quilting in addition to music. I live in near Spring Hill 6 months in winter and Northwood, NH 6 months in summer.

What Bonita H. is saying about this Meetup Group

This is a friendy, fun loving crew so far. No divas, just folks having a great time with a little uke and a common bond of comradship. I like the passing on of technique along with the jamming and listening to those who can really play the instrument as it is meant to be played. Getting better all the time.
