Hi Steve'

Sounds like a wonderful event.  I'm a huge Paul Simon fan.   Wish I could but Robert and I will be in Albuquerque during that time. Maybe someone will post the event on YouTube.

WMNF is planning a 70th birthday tribute for Paul Simon in October which will also serve as a fundraiser for the radio station. They are interested in adding some ukulele artists to the roster of musical talent. If anyone is interested in performing let me know and I will hep set this up. Below is the information about this event.

Date of the show is Saturday Oct 15th 4 to Midnight.  If you wanted to do one band--it would be three songs or up to 12 minutes of songs.  If you wanted to take me up on doing an hour (actually 50 minutes) you could do as many performers or songs you could fit in 50 minutes.  All Paul Simon songs--no matter what group he was in. Here's the official invite with lot's of information about the show.  After that I listed the songs selected so far.

WMNF would like to invite you to be a performer for:

The Sounds of Simon:  The Paul Simon 70th Birthday Tribute

WHEN:  Saturday, October 15th, 5pm-Midnight (Each band’s start time to be determined later)

WHAT:  20 area bands/performers do THEIR versions of Paul Simon songs—songs he did with any band he was in or solo.

WHERE:  Skipper’s Smokehouse

910 Skipper Road (at Nebraska), Tampa

The concept is to have each band or solo performer cover ABOUT three Paul Simon songs.   WMNF will provide a complete back line* and liquid (beer, water, coffee) and solid refreshments.  Any song by Paul Simon is up for grabs. No song played more than twice. Get your songs in to me early for best selection and so I can schedule bands so repeat songs are not played back to back.

We need your help more than ever as the State of Florida has cut $62,000 out of WMNF’s budget. We are asking all the bands to donate their time to this fund raising cause. Every band member will get a FREE ticket voucher, good for one person, to any WMNF event in the next year.  (Except for Birthday party, Heatwave & New Year’s Eve show)

We are looking for Tampa Bay area bands to perform an estimated 3 covers of Paul Simon songs in each of their own styles.  (Example: a Jazz band would do Jazz renditions of Paul Simon songs, a Rock band would do Rock renditions of Paul Simon songs etc.)  Song selection is entirely up to the bands.  Have fun—be as crazy or as serious as you want to be.  ACTUAL PERFORMANCE TIME IS NOT TO EXCEED 12 MINUTES.  (There is a 5 minute set up/take down period for each band between performance times.)  Thus if you selected 2 six minute songs that would complete your set. You can go shorter than 12 minutes-but not longer.  Please let me know if you set is going to be shorter than 12 minutes.

I NEED TO HEAR BACK FROM YOU ASAP (see below)

We appreciate your help in raising money for WMNF.  Benefit shows like this and bands like yours help keep non-commercial radio WMNF on the air.  These shows help us keep our on air fund raisers to only 19 days a year.  I hope you can help.  It’s a lot of fun, you’ll meet lots of people, and it’ll increase your radio airplay and get your music out to lots of people that might never have heard of you.

It’s a great time and we expect a crowd of[masked] based on attendance at the Costello, Rolling Stones, Neil Young, Led Zep and Who Tribute shows etc..  It’s a good way to introduce your band to a larger audience—at the show and during the promotion on WMNF 88.5 leading up to the show.  A number of shows have sold out.

HERE ARE THE BASICS:

Each band/performer plays approximately 3 songs.  If you want to play one long song or 8 short ones that’s ok as long as you play no more than 12 minutes.  There will be 5 minutes between sets for bands to get off stage and the next band to get on stage.  Set times have not been established—after all the bands have been selected and songs submitted, I will publish the set times.

WMNF WILL PROVIDE:

- The Sound system

*The Back line:

5 mics/stands, 1 bass guitar amp, 2 guitar amps, 1 keyboard amp, 1 drum set (kick drum, snare and two toms, with a ride, crash and high hat cymbals)

-Food

-Beverages—beer, coffee and water

-One free ticket per band member to any WMNF event (except Birthday party, Heatwave & New Year’s Eve show)

-A table where we will sell your merchandise for you.

-One guest list person per band member for Paul Simon show.

PLEASE GET BACK TO ME SO I CAN RESERVE YOUR SPOT WHILE YOU CONFIRM WITH OTHER MEMBERS OF YOUR BAND.

So at least let me know you got this email ASAP and if you are either:

-Yes.

-Maybe, need to check and will get back to you.

-No, can’t do it but I love you anyway Flee.

Thanks,

Flee
