In this meetup we're going to get right into it. Right into what? Right into the Supreme Mystery.
Daoism revels in mysteriousness, and advances many grandiose claims. Grandiose claims, in order to avoid being disproven, benefit from vagueness or indeterminacy. The Daodejing (Tao Te Ching) spares no expense in throwing out extravagant, vague, and somewhat inconsistent imagery when discussing ultimate matters.
"Dao" means "a way of acting", and is something you're supposed to be doing. To many people familiar with Daoism, however, this claim might sound somewhat strange: the Daodejing talks about dao in ways usually reserved for deities. It is a "supreme being" of some kind - yet unless this supreme being is something you can *do*, the entire discourse lapses into incoherence.
What is going on here? Evidently the "Supreme Mystery", the mother of heaven-and-earth, the One, the unlimited, is just a way of acting. A way of acting with specific characteristics - but be careful specifying them, or you're in danger of missing it. One thing is clear: by acting this way, you participate in something uniquely worthy of reverence and even worship.
We haven't really spent time *reading* the Daodejing together at this meetup, but this time there is suggested reading material. Everybody can bring whatever translation they like. Take a look at chapters 4, 6, 14, 21, 25, 32, 34, 35, 51. (Daodejing "chapters" are extremely short.) If you don't read anything in advance, that's fine too: we'll try scrutinizing these chapters at the meeting.*Please note the change in date and location of this meetup, as it is not on a Saturday, and it is at the Bourgeois Pig*
