Alvarado Decision 08: Democracy in Action

I know this is outside Tarrant County Proper - but this may fall within the boundaries of certain voting districts that spant Tarrant and Johnson Counties... It's about a 30 minute drive for me... It's a voter's 'trade show' - that is, there'll be booths for candidates and political parties - the GOP and Dems were going to be there... I offered an email up a little while back and to my surprise - we had a few volunteers... We could use even more to administer the 'World's Shortest Political Quiz' and more importantly - help voters understand that we're in the predicament we're in due to BOTH the GOP and Dems and voting for either will lead more of the same! Here's something I clipped off their promotional flyer: "AHS Debate Club members will be giving informational speeches about US presidential nominees. Are you registered to vote? Registrars will be available to register you just in time to vote in the presidential election. Representatives will be on hand to distribute FREE buttons, literature, and to answer questions. There will be performances by ROTC, Band, and Choir. Canned foods will be collected for Trick-or-Treat So Kids Can Eat."

This was awesome! I wish we could do this every day!! The only thing is - I (being a glutton for the spotlight) - love to talk - but only 2 minutes per question was tough! And not yelling at Rep. Chet Edwards for voting 'Yea' on the bailout was much harder!!

It was great seeing the Alvarado high school students participating in our democracy, as well as the candidates participating in a positive debate. Wish we could find more gigs like this one.

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
