A possible new meetup location

Hey all -

I have some interesting news for us local Whovians.

Those who have attended regular meetups are aware of some of the limitations of the downtown library, and much as I love the place, I see them, too. I think the do-it-yourselfness of this group is awesome, but if we didn't have to do it that way, I wouldn't mind.

And, as you know, I had hoped we could work something out with Brit's pub so we could enjoy a pint AND Who, but there just isn't room for Doctor Who there. So you can imagine my delight when I wandered into Merlin's Rest on Lake Street last Tuesday. (http://www.merlinsrest.com). For those familiar with the neighborhood, Merlin's Rest is on the former location of a rather notorious Lake Street spot. The new management has effectively thrown out the riffraff, and turned it into the kind of place that has Strongbow and Guinness on tap, a regular showing by the Celtic band Bedlam, and no TVs in sight but plenty of wireless access.

I also had the distinct pleasure of meeting Merlin's Rest commissioner, Bill Watkins aka Uncle Bill. When I mentioned I was a fan of Doctor Who and I ran a meetup group for it, he was absolutely tickled at the idea of my bringing you all to visit his pub. So tickled, in fact, that he's willing to turn the Doctor Who meetup into a regular event at his pub, including trotting out a standup screen and helping us get our hands on eps (though so far, that's one area where we don't need help!) He sees screening Doctor Who as a legitimate cultural event; what wonderful support for our beloved scifi show!

The parking is free, there's plenty of family style seating so kidlets are welcome, the food is British/Irish (Bill is from Limerick), and he's more than happy to hang a small item of Doctor Who paraphernalia on the wall - there's already a couple Star Trek collector's plates up there. If you are able this Saturday, I'd love to bring you down to Merlin's Rest after the documentaries to check it out and tell me what you think.

Cheers!
