Holiday Train

Making a difference, one stop at a time

The Canadian Pacific Holiday Train hits the rails again in November, visiting over 150 communities across our network. Musicians traveling aboard the trains will play more than 150 free concerts from their boxcar stage.

CP asks that attendees bring a non-perishable food or cash donation. Since the Holiday Train program first launched in 1999, it has raised $7.4 million and 3 million pounds of food

December 14

Cottage Grove: Cottage Grove Rail Yard, 9250 Ideal Ave, further location details to follow for access to yard

Performers: Sheryl Crow and Take 6

Gates open at 4:00 p.m., concert begins at 5:00 p.m.

Prior to each concert, these communities will be able to experience The North Pole Station, a magical village which will feature family-oriented interactive activities, ice carving, hot chocolate and a chance for the kids to visit Santa before making their way to the concert stage.

While the events are free, those attending are asked to make a donation or bring non-perishable food items. Everything collected at each show stays in the community for local distribution.

No parking available at site.  (FREE Shuttles from several Cottage Grove locations.  Visit www.cottage-grove.org for details)

I was glad I went! I had a chance to meet Sheryl Crow in person and her kids and take some photos of them with Santa! I promised not to publish anything with pictures of her kids involved so I cannot do that. She was a very gracious woman!
This also gave me a chance to shoot some video with my DSLR in manual mode so I could adjust for all the difficult lighting on the stage. Thank you for getting me out of the house on a cold afternoon, it was delightful!

The only thing was bad was shooting the train. It was too early in the day. But the rest of it was very cool.

Just a heads up for people going on Saturday. I went to the one in Lake City on Wednesday evening and the train was actually earlier than scheduled and didn't stay too long. I think since this is a larger event this won't be an issue, however I would make sure that if you are looking to do train shots I would get them done first before moving on to shoot anything else in case it is over quicker than anticipated.

Do we have anybody that wants to go out for coffee afterwards

    December 13, 2013

    • Mark K.

Should be able to. I went ahead and photographed it already this week down in Lake City which was really nice given the small mount of people so you could focus on the train itself.

Who is getting excited for this Saturday? Note this is an outdoor only event and there will be no seating. If you do want to sit we recommend bringing your own portable chairs. Remember to dress warm and bring your food bank donations!

For our 15th year, we wanted to give our fans a first-ever opportunity to gain tickets to ride the train so we incorporated this into our second annual "Capture the Spirit" Facebook photo contest.

Four top prize packs are eligible to be won consisting of a ride for a family of four on the 2014 Holiday Train on a leg of your choice and $500 donation in your name to your local food bank. Contest runs November 26th to December 27th. To enter, like the CP Holiday Train Facebook page and upload up to three photos of the train, entertainment or food banks to enter.

Just found out the Holiday Train will be in Loretto. Thanks Cara for the tip. It is the next day after this meetup Dec. 15th at 4:30PM.
They will have Willie Porter and The Claytones performing. No charge but bring non-perishables. Might work better for you Western Twin Cityers. Loretto is just North of Baker Park on Co.Rd.19 between Hwy 55 and Hwy 12.

Were you at the Chaska football game last week? If I remember right, you were in high school the last time they made the state tournament.

      November 21, 2013

    • Garry W.

No, I have been in Chaska for about a year. I don't know if they made state. I was busy miking cows many many years ago.

I will be going down to Lake City and photographing the train down there as well. I am hoping to also find a spot to catch the train in motion at night. I will be posting more information about where I might try to do that. I will try to see if they have the lights always on as it drives down the tracks, but I am not sure. Would be really cool to get it moving with the lights going.

Mark, I know it's stopping in Loretto... You might want to find a place to shoot between Cottage Grove and there is you want some good night shots of the train in motion.

I went ahead and linked the interactive schedule as well as the website for Canadian Pacific Holiday Train above. This will allow people to view the schedule of different stops and times if they are unable to make the meetup and still wish to go photograph it.
