Camera Basics 101!

This workshop/class will cover all the basic camera functions and how they relate to each other. Does ISO mean nothing to you, finding out an EV (exposure value) or shooting with a short depth of field confuses you, than this is the workshop for you!

With your camera in hand, we will cover the following:

  • ISO or ASA for you film people
  • f-Stop and their signatures
  • Shutter speeds
  • Camera shooting modes (P, A, S, M)
  • Focus patterns
  • Metering modes

We will also spend some time talking photography math so numbers start making sense. (ie. f8+f8=f11, not f16) I will try to keep this class to 2.5 hours but will stay later for anyone who needs a little more time. I promise a take-away for everyone who attends!

Hi, John. I tried to attend tonight's class (Sun.12/16 @ 6:30-9pm) but was locked out of the bldg. I'd had a little difficulty locating the Hilton Ctr. & then Bldg. 6A so it was 6:40 something when I arrived at Bldg. 5&6 & some young men on the steps told me I would probably find 6A farther up the ramp, pointing in the direction the road ran. Thinking they meant outside, I drove farther looking for 6A. Returning, I asked them again & they explained the ramp was inside. By the time I'd parked & walked up the steps, they'd gone back in &, apparently, either they locked the door or it just locked behind them. I knocked on the doors & waited for some time but finally gave up & drove home. I'm sorry I missed the class, which I was looking forward to, & apologize for any inconvenience to you. I was wondering if you might be offering the class again and, if so, if I might be able to transfer my registration to a different date since I was unable to get in tonight. Thanks very much...Ann OB.

Ann - I reply from my phone but it doesn't look like it made it here. I am so sorry you got locked out. I will post my cell number on the door from now on so others don't get the same problem.

Had a great time at this meeting. Learned a lot about my camera and now I can practice everything John showed us. I can't wait. It was exactly what I needed to get started.

So it is okay to bring a film camera then?

    December 10, 2012

    • John I.

Of course. I would have it empty so you can click and play. Then put film in it......
