Thanks for joining our Meetup - I'm Rob Hill, the executive director and head coach of Team Spiridon. We're a non-profit group here in Austin that provides low-cost training for runners, that then raise funds for local animal welfare organizations like Austin Pets Alive, Emancipet, Love-a-Bull, Animal Trustees of Austin, and others. Last year, in only our second year as a non-profit, our runners raised almost $8,000 during their six months of half marathon and marathon training, bringing our annual total to over $11,000.
If you're a runner, or want to be a runner, or just want to help out a growing group of runners that want to provide a "common flag" for our great local animal charities, you should join up!
Our training centers primarily around the Livestrong Austin Marathon and Half Marathon - of which we're proud to be one of the official charities. We're dedicated to providing high-quality training in a fun, supportive, but challenging environment. We don't engage in or put up with elitism or arrogance - we're all in this together.
We also hold monthly pub runs (we call them the "Run/Drink/Repeats"), each benefiting a different animal charity. Last year, these runs raised about $1,800 for such organizations.
Another of our initiatives is "Jog-a-Dog", which encourages runners to run with shelter dogs, getting them "off-campus", out of the stressful shelter environment for some exercise that's more brisk and prolonged than they would normally get, making them healthier, happier, and ultimately, more adoptable.
Thanks for joining the group - we hope you'll join us for our pun runs and other events, and that you'll come run with us, see what we're about, and join a team that will help you to your personal goals, while helping give companion animals the lives they deserve.
