Columbus Code Jam (May 2013)

An evening  kibitzing and coding.

Columbus Code Jam is a meetup to pair on cool projects, get one-on-one guidance from experienced developers & sys admins, network, learn, and eat pizza.

Topics we've discussed while hacking:

  1. Git Workflows for moving from single-developers to small teams.
  2. Modelling tree structures in RDBMS tables and the SQL to query them.
  3. High-level architecture of a Rails application.
  4. Computing in the bad-old-days of dial-up.
  5. Twitter Bootstrap
  6. CSS
  7. Getting a rails app from Github running from scratch.
  8. Beginner's Resources - How to learn how to program.
  9. The security implication of using "#!/usr/bin/env ruby" vs "#!/path/to/ruby"
  10. Upgrading a Rails 2 app to Rails 3
  11. Embedding disqus or facebook comments in a web page.

Come and add your voice and language to the conversation.

Code Jam was awesome last night, and that's because of all of you wonderful, diverse folks who came out and shared your expertise and your desire to learn.

We had old hands and newbies, folks knee deep in tech, and folks just trying to figure out what tech they need, and how to get it all put together.

Thanks. I'm sorry I wasn't able to attend today. My professor needed a presentation built today. I definitely want to make next time. How did it go?

I feel your pain. I can think of four of five additional evening activities I'd like to add to my calendar. Glad to hear that you're attending.

We're up to 14! We might have to sneak into the bigger room to accommodate all you! :-)
