Breakfast Series with Rich Hoeg from the Honeywell International: Successful utilization of Web 2.0 and Social Networking Tools Within the Corporate Environment

As part of Honeywell's Corporate Information Technology team, Rich Hoeg leads the web collaboration and knowledge sharing research activities. His role is to investigate and pilot new tools with an eye towards enhancing knowledge sharing by Honeywell's global workforce of 120,000+ employees.

Join Mr. Hoeg as he demonstrates how the development and utilization of social networking tools at Honeywell has led to improved efficiency, enhanced knowledge sharing, greater productivity, and new innovations within the corporate environment. He will give an overview of the “Honeywell Knowledge Center” (corporate Intranet), and the social media tools they employ to improve workflow and the collaboration of ideas, including:

  • Blogs
  • Discussion Forum - SharePoint
  • Informal Collaboration - Yammer (Twitter like tool)
  • Social Search – Connectbeam
  • Team Rooms - SharePoint
  • Wiki - Confluence

Hoeg is an expert and Greenbelt certified in knowledge management. As opposed to using high priced tools, his approach is to find user friendly, practical low cost resources that may be quickly adopted by the Honeywell user community.

About Rich Hoeg
Hoeg’s career has followed the rise of the micro-computer and the World Wide Web. Back in the 1980's he started Honeywell's computer training program. In the 1990's he built some of Honeywell's first internal and external Web services, and now after having built Honeywell's eLearning and virtual library portal, he is focusing upon knowledge collaboration / sharing tools for Honeywell. As he summarizes, he is trying to build the "virtual water cooler!”

Some of his recent projects include the creation of internal engineering blogs, wikis, a social network / tagging engine, and a technology podcast. He also has extensive content development and product admin knowledge on these systems.

Rich is flying in from Minneapolis to discuss outstanding successes he has had in transforming the processes of an organization utilizing Social Networking Tools with great success. It was a challenge for him to get the leadership at Honeywell to let the employees control content using social media tools. However, once they did, collaboration and productivity skyrocketed. This is a great opportunity to hear from a leader using innovative approaches using social media within a large corporation.

This was a very high quality speaker. Rich was knowledgeable and articulate. I left wishing it had been a longer workshop.

Rich Hoeg must be a genius since he can balance the many facets of social media in a big enterprise. He was extremely open and informative about what he is doing at Honeywell and it is a dynamic and a great positive change for the way people communicate and work together. Somehow or other he was able to explain it in a way that I feel I understood the many good ideas that he shared. Thank you Rich. Donn Griffith

This was a great presentation and generated a lot of new ideas for me. My situation isn't exactly like his at Honeywell but many of the solutions he used could be adapted for my application.

Rich was very knowledgeable and his discussion was informative, but I'm not sure that the background given on the session was accurate or informative enough. I was looking for ways that I could use Social networking tools to help my small business. What I got was ways that Honeywell had adapted external tools for internal use.

Great presentation - there's a lot more content to get through than what we had time for, but Rich is a wealth of information on E2.0.
  • Brad Griffith
This was a great run-down on what Web 2.0 / Social Media tools Honeywell is using. There wasn't much detail on the efficacy of various strategies, but he told us what has worked for Honeywell. Very worthwhile.

The information imparted was very interesting but the seating arrangements were very poor!
