State of the Interactive/Design Community in Baltimore

With universities like MICA, a growing intersection between product development shops and agencies that specialize in interactive/design and an exploding game development community, Baltimore is poised to lead the Mid-Atlantic region in regard to interactive and design talent development.

But the question remains: how can this growing sector show off to retain and grow local talent? Let's do our part with a conversation and some no-pressure networking. This event is FREE.

Join Cynergy, MICA and Friends of the Web for a discussion about this topic at the November BmoreTech Meetup.

We'll have food and beer at Cynergy's awesome, brand new digs in Harbor East/Little Italy.

6p: Arrive early for free food and beer provided by the Cynergy recruiting team
7p: Panel discussion and presentations featuring Cynergy, MICA's Career Development team and Friends of the Web.

I'm really sorry I had to miss this event--especially after telling the UX Book Club about it last week and seeing several design/UX/IA peers and colleagues on the attendee list. I hope I can make it to a similar meetup soon.

Hi Catharine, Mike and Panayiotos - I'd be very interested in both a UX/Dev and a prototyping meetup. We (myself and co-founders) have an IA/UX group that's been meeting for a couple of years and we'd love to partner with other groups!

For those agencies who felt they don’t have a connection with MICA and the MICA student population, here are some resources for you:

There is a general overview of how employers can get in touch with MICA here:

    http://www.mica.edu/Documents/Career%20Services/resources/MICAEmployerGuideFolderFINAL.pdf, and here:
    http://www.mica.edu/Academic_Services_and_Libraries/Career_Development/For_Employers.html

If you want to get a job in front of MICA students and Alumni, check out http://micanetwork.com. You can create an employer account and submit a job.

I’d also suggest getting in touch with Megan Miller, who runs the Career Development Center at MICA. Her email address is [masked]

Megan is also the person to get in touch with if you are looking for an intern. An intern is a great way to get a design student with great design thinking, and mold them with the information you need them to know.

Good to finally meet you, Ben! Keep in touch and stop by the office soon. There's a game of ping pong waiting for you.

Lastly, as a teacher, it would be great to have members of the community who have specific skill sets come into class and teach a workshop around a specific topic. Are you looking for a designer who has skills in ruby templates and prefers HAML & SASS… come and teach them why that is awesome.

I’m teaching an advanced web design class that covers such topics, and it would be great to have members of the community be involved.

If you’d like to be involved in some way, email me [masked].

I am in discussion with a faculty member to provide such support. I'll shoot you an email when the details are finalized.

Great discussion tonight. Thanks so much to the organizers and our affable hosts!

Tonight's conversation about the lack of preparation and training for designers and other artistic types for the actual business of running a design business brought to mind a good book on the subject by Mike Monteiro, called Design is a Job.

    The official site is here:

    http://www.abookapart.com/products/design-is-a-job

And here are a lot of reviews on GoodReads:

    http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/13574985-design-is-a-job

And, for the full Mike Monteiro A/V assault, here's the talk that started the book and the revolution, "F*ck you, pay me":

    http://vimeo.com/22053820

As you might gather, Mike has strong opinions on the subject.

Thanks again. Hope to see y'all again.

A shockingly good event. There were lots of tech people you don't normally see at the Baltimore events. I knew 10% of the attendees vs. knowing 90% when I go to other events
