Eiseman Hut Backcountry Ski Trip

The huts are fast filling up for what is looking like a great ski season this winter. It is time to visit my favorite new hut, the Ben Eiseman Hut, over Christmas break. This hut was thoughtfully located in the middle of some of the best mid-winter (low-angle) glade skiing terrain of any hut I have seen in Colorado. It is the newest and possibly the largest hut in the 10th mountain hut system with 2 full kitchens. It sleeps 16 and will have other groups in the hut with us during our stay.

Although the terrain surrounding the hut is safe for mid-winter skiing, this is not a good trip for beginners because of the strenuous length and elevation gain of the route to the hut. It is accessed via a hiker's trail-head in Vail, CO, just north of I-70. The hike in isn't for the faint of heart; 6 ¾ miles with 2,900 feet of elevation gain. There is also the option for an alternate route that is accessible via snowmobile, if anyone has one to shuttle our gear in. More information and maps can be found here:

http://www.huts.org/The_Huts/eiseman.html

http://www.hutski.com/hut-routes/eiseman/eiseman-hut.html

The entire hut is fully booked Saturday night, so I am planning to stay over December 22nd, Sunday night - December 26th, Thursday morning. If you are interested, you can RSVP, but you have to call the 10th mountain huts to make your own reservations ($33 per night per person). I recommend doing so as soon as possible because the available spots may fill up soon (there are/were 7 available spots when I wrote this event up).

We can carpool up there on Sunday morning from the park n ride in Denver. I have room for 2 people including gear.

I would really prefer to skin in on 23rd and leave on 25th. Anybody else is on the same schedule?

It's a long skin for a solo traveler. I think I'll change plans. Have fun guys!

Hi Natalie, I plan on heading in early Monday (or late Sunday) if you're interested.

    Hi all,
I agree with Talya to have an earlier start on Sunday from the trailhead. I assume we are skiing up the Spraddle Creek trail and meeting at the trailhead. Here is a link with directions to the trailhead: http://www.huts.org/The_Huts/printable_trailheads/SpraddlePrint.html It is a long haul into the hut. What do you think of a 9 am rendezvous at the trailhead? I think I am driving out solo as I expect to head out on the 25th.

Also, love to get clarification on meals. I will bring enough tortellini & a veggie for 4 [Talya will be gone by then] for the night of the 24th. Anyone want to bring a dessert or something for that night?

Maybe you can let us know what you are bringing and what nights and we can be set.

Figure we have cell phone service out there so let's get numbers in case we are missing someone at the trailhead. I'm at 3-zero-3 [masked]

Actually, the idea I had was for everyone to bring food for 3-4 people for one night. There are 3 nights and 6 people, so that allows for a 2 course meal each night.

My friend Israel is going to be joining us for all 4+ days. He will bring dinner for one night. Who will be staying until the 26th:

    Andy & +1
    Ananda
    Israel

    Leaving on the 25th:

    David

    Leaving on the 24th:

    Talya

It seems that due to geographic differences and varying return times, noone will be carpooling together, so let's meet at the trail-head on Sunday. I have updated the meeting location link (above) to reflect the new meeting location.

I agree that it would be prudent to start earlier, because it may take 5-7 hours to get to the hut. 9 AM is a good meeting time on Sunday morning. There is a full write up about the spraddle creek route in the hutski.com link above. There is also a GPS track and the GPS
Coordinates of the hut on the same page.

I will be staying at my friend Israel's house in Breckenridge on Saturday night. There is room for more if anyone else wants to avoid the early morning wake up time in Denver on Sunday.

Hi all! A couple of questions.
Is anyone else leaving on the 24th?
How many are there going to be for dinners?
Does anyone want to leave much earlier? Maybe aim to be at the trailhead at 9 am on the 22nd?
    thanks

Like eric I'm a bc beginner, so I'll wait for a different trip. I can't wait to meet some new friends to explore the back country. I live in Colorado Springs, so if any of you are from down here, shoot me up.

For a meal I think I will make cheese tortellini. And as Talya is allergic to wheat why don't I make it up for the night of the 24th.
Hard to get a handle on who is staying on the night of the 25th so I figure these meals are for the 22, 23, & 24?

I plan on returning on the 25th and if anyone else is then let me know so we can coordinate xport.

Is the plan to meet at the Park and Ride at 9 am Sunday?

    December 16, 2013

  • Ananda

It would be nice to do group meals for dinner. We could each bring enough dinner for 3-4 people on one night. That way there is a two course group dinner each night. Who is meeting at the park and ride in Golden on Sunday?

    When are people returning?

    December 15, 2013

    • Ananda

I will bring vegan gluten free Thai Curry.

    Hi,
I think Amanda has a great idea. I can make a veggie mexican dinner. I am allergic to wheat so if anyone is planning a pasta meal I will bring along some of my own pasta :)

I will be skinning in on the 22nd and departing after a few laps on the 24th. I hope to be off the mountain by 3:30 or 4 on the 24th.

    Are there 6 of us?

Hi! I am in for the nights of the 22nd and 23rd...I may or may not extend through the 24th. So excited. I think this is my 3rd trip to Eiseman. Building a shrine to Uller tonight.

I have reserved the hut through to leaving in Thur, 26th but if someone wanted to leave on the 25th let me know as that would probably work out better for me.

I've heard so much about this hut! I probably won't do all 4 days, but interested in at least a couple.

I was going to meet at the TH, not sure what my schedule is

      December 5, 2013

I recommend at least 3 days because the approach is so strenuous that you won't have much time or energy for skiing on the first day.
