Zen Martial Art, an Introduction to Shim Gum Do, the Mind-Sword Way

“Shim Gum Do” - The Mind-Sword Way:  Zen Martial Art with Jake Bowman.

This class is an introduction to the practice of martial art as a meditative exercise and peaceful method of spirited self-defense. Zen martial art serves to heal, strengthen and deepen the mind-body connection with oneself and others. It is a workout for the neuro-muscular junction especially, and trains an active awareness of the whole body interacting with its surrounds. It also empowers joints, tendons and ligaments along with deep connective tissue often neglected in modern exercise, not to mention toning psychic power. Focus will be on assessment of your basic yoga skills, tai-chi fluidity, qi-gong conditioning and general kung-fu fitness with an aim toward expanding your whole body's experience of meditation, rest and relaxation. Attendees will have an opportunity to study the discipline of Shim Gum Do, 'the mind-sword way,' if they're interested in pursuing a traditional course in Zen martial art. Please wear something loose and comfortable.

About the teacher:
Jake Bowman has studied and practiced Zen, yoga, archery, poetry, firefighting, fencing & kendo, calligraphy, boxing, kung-fu, karate & kickboxing, Western wrestling & jujitsu, horseback-riding, all the liberal arts and a few conservative ones, magic & technology, divination, spiritual science & materialism, sailing, sustainability & environmental management (for which he earned his college degree), community development & civics as a member of government (appointed in lieu of election), ecological agriculture, forestry and fishery, first aid & CPR, tai chi & qi gong, all of which he realized one day were one and the same thing: “skilled means” and the essential tools of a modern knight templar.
