Urban Peak Dinner

  • Jan 5, 2013 · 4:30 PM
  • Urban Peak Youth Shelter

This is a chance to help out young people in need -- and have fun in the kitchen together!

Urban Peak is is a nonprofit organization that helps young people in the Denver area overcome homelessness and other real-life challenges to become self-reliant adults. The first Saturday of every month, we cooks dinner for the teens at the Urban Peak youth shelter. (We could serve anywhere from 15 to 40 young people, depending on how cold it's going to be overnight and other factors.)

We start cooking at 4:30 and serve dinner at 6:30. After all the young people have been served, we serve ourselves and eat in the dining area with them. We're typically finished by around 7:00 and go out on the town afterwards.

Each volunteer is asked to contribute $20 for groceries. Please bring $20 in cash with you to the shelter.

Last month, the menu theme was "Festival of Fajitas." This month's menu is TBD -- suggestions welcome!

If you RSVP for this event, please treat it as a real commitment. We will be counting on you to help. If you have car trouble or get sick at the last minute or anything like that, please call Dan at[masked] to let him know. Thanks!

As I feared it turns out I have to work today after all and won't be able to make it =/ I was looking forward to meeting you all and was especially excited to help out at Urban Peak but I hope we can sign up to cook the meal again in the near future and will hopefully meet you all soon! Have fun today and again, sorry, for having to drop out last minute.

I got another vote for beef stew via e-mail, so let's do that. I'll call my Mom and get her beef stew recipe!

Does anyone have a cornbread recipe? Or a good veggie soup recipe? (We should have a vegetarian alternative -- there are usually a handful of vegetarians among the kids, the Urban Peak staff, and/or ourselves.)

    Why not chili?

Good suggestions, Brian! Beef stew is always delicious in cold winter months... or we could do a whole Southern BBQ theme. What do the rest of you think?

My vote is for Beef Stew. With a good bread for dipping. Great ideas! Look forward to seeing you all, it's been a while!

Got the email about brainstorming on menu ideas. A couple of thoughts I have are either BBQ chicken or beef stew.
Anyway, will be my first meetup with the group... look forward to Saturday.
