Werner Herzog captures the miraculously preserved beauty of the oldest paintings yet discovered.
Directed by Werner Herzog
Running time 90 min
Granted rare access to the Chauvet cave in France’s Ardèche valley, Herzog chose to use 3D to capture the miraculously preserved beauty of the oldest paintings yet discovered. Examining the pictures of bison, rhinos, lions and horses, he tries to cross ‘the abyss of time’ and understand how the artists of 32,000 years ago lived and thought, by consulting various scientists about the history, geology and function of the cave and its environs. Though one of Herzog’s more conventional films (save for an unexpected epilogue), it offers a fine opportunity to see and ponder some truly lovely images.
