Yosemite Backpacking Weekend April 27

  • April 27, 2013 · 9:00 AM

A short overnight trip in Yosemite for next weekend (April 27). The plan is to leave Friday night, car camp somewhere before Yosemite (or in Hodgdon Meadow campground). Saturday pick up permit and hike about 5 miles to Little Yosemite Valley (taking the upper Mist Trail and Vernal Falls). Stay the night in LYV. Sunday day hike in that area (maybe half way to half dome, or all the way to Clouds Rest), then hike back to the trailhead and head back home.

Since the trip is coming up very soon, there will be no lottery or deposit.  Please sign up only if you are sure you can make it.  Limit 6 people for this trip.  Carpooling is strongly encouraged.

More details about meeting location and time will be sent out to the final group of attendees.

Bear canisters are required for Yosemite.  Although, LYV has bear lockers and backcountry pit toilets (if they are open).

I will be driving from San Jose on Friday evening. Possibly will arrive to Hodgdon Meadow by 10-11pm. Will be setting tent in the light of flashlights.

There's a possibility we could go together. What time do you plan on heading out? You'll be driving right past me.

Tom, I would like to use a couple of the beer cans you have available? How large are they and what's the shape(round, square)? Thank you

Well, my beer cans are cylindrical and hold about 12 ounces but my bear cans are 3 x Garcia Cans: http://www.backpacker... and 2 x BV500: http://www.bearvault....

Morning, folks. Where is everyone coming from? I'll most likely need to take off early from work and would like to get a time to them today if I could. So far, it looks like I'm the furthest south. Radwan is in Berkley and Tom is heading out from the city- I'm in Fremont.

Thanks Kate for the tips. How was the bug situation? Any mosquitoes yet?
Permits are available at a non-competitive basis (a.k.a. no trail quota). Yosemite starts imposing trailhead quota starting next weekend or the one after I think. So we should be fine. Campsite for Friday night will be taking care of.
I will be emailing the "yes" group with more details sometime soon.

The mosquitos were few and far between, but we did not camp near water.

Hello - I don't mind driving - I live in Redwood City but will be leaving directly from my office in SOMA - planning on taking the afternoon off and hitting the road a little earlier to miss traffic and get to the campsite at a decent hour. I have a Jeep with tons of room for stuff.
Also, I have lots of extra gear if anyone needs to borrow anything (I have bear cans Don). Radwan had said that on these trips people usually cook for themselves but I would be more than willing to arrange food and cook communal meals if people are interested - I have multiple stoves and big pots etc... - Don can attest that my cooking is edible :)
I also have a large gravity powered bladder water filter that will be able to handle the groups purification needs at the LYV campsite.
Let me know if anyone needs a lift - it has been a long time since I was at Yosemite and really looking forward to this!

Hey there- where is everyone coming from? Just putting feelers out to see possible carpool combo's. Also- what's the deal on bear cans? Can you get them there, or does anyone have an extra one/ sharing space. I'm from back east where the bears are still behind the times on bear bag defeating techniques, and the last time I was in Yosemite was in 95- back when they weren't required (Been in Cali a year now). I'm in Niles (Fremont), btw...

Hey, I'm just back from YNP and wanted to provide a tip: you can self-register for a permit at the ranger station at the east entrance. There is a box out front where you fill out your info and where you're going. Have fun! The crowds are minimal. Clouds Rest looked icy on top.
