Grand Canyon of Tuolumne, Loop in and out from Tuolumne Meadows

2 night, 3 day backpacking trip.
We will hike out of Tuolume to Glen Aulin go past it and find a campsite (about 6 to 7 miles total that day), the next day we will day hike up to Le Conte and Wagonwheel falls and then return to our campsite for the 2nd night and on the third day hike out.

It's a small group (permit is for 3) and a scenic area so expect stops and starts for photo's and a slow steady pace on the way in so no one gets lost on the many forks of the trail.

Distance: 17  to 20 miles counting the day hike

Trailhead Elevation: 8,500 feet (2,550 meters)
Glen Aulin Elevation: 7,900 feet (2,400 meters)
Total Elevation Change: 600 feet (180 meters)

Bear Canisters are required and also it's important to keep a clean campsite in this area.

Expect to get your feet wet with many water crossings. The water should be high so use caution at all crossings.

We will meet at

TuolumneMeadowsVisitorsCenterat 9amand then hike to the trailhead so park you car and be ready to go.

Parking

You can also park along the unpaved road that leads from the trailhead lot to the stables, provided you avoid the areas marked as no parking. If the dirt road is full, which I've seen before, you'll have to find a spot along Tioga Road.

Getting there:

If you're approaching from the the east, you'll find Tuolumne Meadows just under 8 miles (13 km) west of the Tioga entrance.

If you're coming from Yosemite Valley, follow highway 120 for 10 miles (16.8 km) up out of the valley to the Crane Flat intersection with Tioga Road, then take the Tioga Road 38 miles (61 km) east to reach the meadows

My wife and I plan on day-hiking to Waterwheel Falls from Tuolumne tomorrow, so maybe we'll see you on the trail! A friend who did this route Memorial day last year said there was no flooding, but the streams were high. This year is even drier than the last, so I'm hopeful that the trail isn't flooded.

    Hi all,
Have any of you talked with rangers or other people to get an idea of the snow conditions? I'm interested in hiking in this area in the next week or so and would appreciate any tips. Thanks!

Rangers haven't been to that area yet, so all the info is from similar conditions in previous years. Wet n muddy trail, some snowy spots under the trees, and delaney and dingley creek crossings at about knee level but slow moving water. hth

Anthony - Thanks for the information. Though I read your comments just now, I was able to call this morning and get the permits for Saturday May 18th for another meetup group. Plenty of permits are available for this time of the year. I snagged 4 and will probably grab some more as walk-ins. I booked a group camp site at Hodgdon for Friday May 17th. Let me know if anyone wants to camp there on Friday and split the cost. cheers

Sounds good. Shoot me an email and I can send you the site #. I won't be there before 10ish pm on Friday though. If there are less than 10 people, it's $5 per head. cheers

I will be there by early evening now

Kevin, contact me. The waitlist option was on automatic but if you actually made a payment I'll find a way to get you a refund. I don't show any payments and I canceled that option early on. I tried to email you but you have the option turned off.

FYI - the current trail conditions info from someone who did it last year on the week after the road opened - The trails are quite wet and muddy. Once you get into the trees there will still be some snow on the ground. Delaney and Dingley are wet fords, water will be up to your knees. And yes the area beyond Glen Aulin will have flooded trails. All that being said there is nothing like the Glen Aulin hike in spring. The waterfalls are majestic, it is just a wonderful experience.

Sounds great! does anyone want to carpool from SF area?

    May 7, 2013

    • Meg

Hi Erik, I'm in Mill Valley and would like to carpool but not sure what the situation with permits is. Could we put a group of 3 together and get a permit there?

      May 10, 2013

  • sarah

Yes, I would like to join for the 17th, Friday. I'd arrive late though. I need to getting schedule cleared though (might have work). Talk this week?

Is anyone else thinking of going?

    May 7, 2013

    • Fred R.

If you consider Palo Alto along the way, I'd be interested in carpooling.

Carl - I am also in potrero hill. Let's sync up for future trips.

I only have a permit for 3. but the people on the waiting list might want to band together and either apply for a permit now by filling out the form and faxing it in or by driving in to get a walk in permit together either for this trail or a backup trail that is less used in the area, like rancheria falls etc.

    2 · May 9, 2013

  • Anthony W.

No the permit was only for 3 on this one. Just a small group this time.

Would love to join if possible.
