Half Dome under the moonlight with two nights board and real bed.

UPDATE: We had some problems with Paypal, so we will send an email to those who have RSVPed with payment instructions. Thanks! -Amy and Joe Let's summit half dome under the full moon and then sleep in a real bed after a world class day hike! The plan is to start at midnight and hike through the night under the nearly-full June moon, watch the sun rise over the valley and have a long casual descent avoiding the crowds. Thursday night will be spent at the house. Friday we'll do something more casual or just chill at the house. Drive back Saturday. We'll leave the Bay Area and caravan to Yosemite Wednesday night, pack up and head out for the hike around midnight. We'll start our hike around 12am and ascend with amazing moonlit views of the valley. The moon sets at 2:10, so be prepared for a few very dark hours. The sun rises at 5:30 am or so and we'll be at the top to watch it. After warming up and eating breakfast we'll have a casual day of hiking downhill taking frequent breaks to take in the scenery. Thursday night will be spent at the house with a light and early dinner, we'll probably be pretty beat. I'll make breakfast burritos Friday morning! Friday afternoon we'll have lots of options. Friday night we'll have a potluck dinner. Head back Saturday. Everyone should have a bed, but you may have to double up if you aren't already coupled. The house looks great and has a deck with a view. Bring gloves, a flashlight, good shoes, plenty of water and enough food for a long hike. Plus food/wine/beer for the Friday potluck or anything else you want to eat, we'll have a full kitchen. Please be mindful of your physical ability and how you might affect the group. It's a 4 to 5 hour, 8 mile, 4800 foot ascent and then a 8 mile trek back, and yes, we really will start at about midnight - experienced hikers only!!

Loved the idea of hiking at night and being on the top early with no crowd.

For those who haven't done Half Dome before (like me), check out this article. Most important tip for me: bring gloves for the cables.

Hey guys, I just got a word of warning that the mosquitoes are bad at higher elevation areas that are still wet from the snow melting. Be sure to bring your defense of choice.

We picked up a permit for 7 for anyone wishing to check out Rancheria falls for a casual 2 day hike. (Walk to Saturday, camp one night, and a walk out on Sunday)

Just a reminder for anyone else as forgetful as I am: If you're planning on going for the Rancheria falls extender on Saturday/Sunday, that'll be your typical backcountry camping, so you'll need bags for that.

    There will be sheets.

    June 20, 2010

  • Galka

Do we need sleeping bags, or will there be... sheets (?!!) ? I will bring pasta and homemade tomato sauce for Th (or Fri) night.

Hey folks. Regarding groceries. We can hit the shop at Curry Village after the hike on Thursday morning (if we can still walk). :) Otherwise, looks like the nearest store is outside the park at El Portal.

Me and Amy are driving together. Let's meet at the Wendy's at this location: http://tinyurl.com/2edgmls around 8:30/9. We'll caravan from there. If I'm guesstimating travel times right, that'll put us on the trail head about midnight. This means you should leave the bay area around 7pm.

If memory serves, Joe is also in SF so we could possible meet up before heading out.

    June 17, 2010

  • Galka

Ah, OK. Ben, we can just drive my car if you can meet me downtown. Anybody else needs a ride? Where/when are we supposed to meet the rest of the group?

    June 17, 2010

  • Grant

Oops, I only have room remaining for one passenger, in addition to Elena and Rachel....

    June 17, 2010

  • Galka

@Grant, Ben: if Ben can meet me by my office (Market and Main), we can both drive to hayward/castro valley to meet Grant and Elena there. Elena, is there a place for me to leave my car?

    June 17, 2010

  • Grant

I've got room for two more passengers. Leaving from Oakland and picking up one passenger (Elena) along 580 near hayward/castro valley

I share a car since I rarely use one so I'd ideally carpool. I'm happy to caltrain anywhere to meet someone.

    June 17, 2010

  • Galka

    oh, and cables ARE up

    June 17, 2010

  • Galka

Carpooling? I really do not like driving that switchback in the dark, I am ok driving the rest of the way. I have a car and plan to leave from SF downtown after work (before 5 to beat the traffic).

Scratch that, here is a link to the address: http://tiny.cc/901xo Best bet would be to try "Search Nearby". I was planning on purchasing food up there for eating at the house.

Half Dome is about the same elevation as Tuolomne Meadows, and acording to the weather underground it's getting to between 30-40 degrees Fahrenheit at night.

Hey all, check out that waxing moon tonight. It will be glorious next week (if its not overcast). Joe, where is this party condo located? Is there somewhere nearby to procure groceries, or must we arrive fully stocked? Care to hazard a guess about the low temp in the wee hours at the summit?

The Half Dome cables will be ready for use on June 16, 2010, conditions permitting. The cable route will be closed during installation on June 15.

Do you guys know that cables are not up yet? A friend was just there and said that indeed there is snow on the subdome still. http://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/halfdome.htm

We randomly select people off the waiting list if anyone cancels.

    May 22, 2010

  • Peter

Is coming off of the wait list contingent upon being connected 24/7, or do people in the wait list automatically moved up to the "yes" list according to their rank in the waitlist?

It's a full house we have rented, sorry, not a 'condo'. I'll update the title. Here are the details of the home: http://www.vrbo.com/220139

Let us know if you find a place close by or get a camp site.

Yeah maybe we can get a 2nd group going since I would still love to go. Where is the condo you are staying at maybe we can just get aother room?

Just got the email about a spot opening up, went to RSVP "yes" 15 minutes after the email went out, but "yes" isn't an option. Am I correct in assuming the spot was already filled?

Hey guys, I was talking with Amy about this trip at Mile's brunch on Saturday. There are a whole lot of you on the waiting list and wanting to go. It would seem kind of a shame if you didn't take advantage of the connection this group provides. Neither of us has the time to organize another group, but I would encourage one of you to step up and give it a shot!
