Crabtree backpacking (starting near Dodge Ridge: Highway 108)

This will be a two night backpack trip at Crabtree.  We will be hiking to Piute Lake on Saturday morning where we will be camping for two nights. On Sunday an optional hike is Emigrant Lake (14 miles)...there are also many lakes within a few miles of Piute Lake.  We will be hiking out via Grouse Lake/Pine Valley on Monday.  Doing a one night trip...hiking out on Sunday is also an option.   (see http://www.everytrail.com/view_trip.php?trip_id=797154) The route is similar to the one in the supplied link

Thank you, Theresa, for organizing!! (Have you seen the bear poop on your way back?)

It was very nice to meet all of you !!

Alex and I did the loop to the east (Gem, Buck, Deer, Jewelry, back) and did about 13 miles (extended it in 1 mile around upped Buck lake). He was concerned that I am too slow, so I walked faster dipping my feet twice in 2 lakes along the way which sped me up. going out (I did the same and hiked with sandals from the last lake (hiking much faster w\ sandals)). It was worth staying, as these lakes were the most beautiful lakes in this trip.
And one thing about Alex that can hike extremely fast downhill - he will never leave a troop in the filed (meaning: wait for the slowest hiker to make sure he's behind and was not left for the bear to be eaten).

Thanks to everyone who attended and made this trip a great time. The scenery was spectacular and we had great autumn weather. It was also great to have my guests, Reiko and Nick attend who experienced great off trail adventures. I'm looking forward to returning to further explore this spectacular wilderness.

Good trip, first time for me with this group. Special Thanks to Theresa for organizing without an Organizer and snubbing the Lottery rule. In the end, all fears about weather failed to materialize and the two stubborn ones made the day hike *almost* as designed, even with a freak extra mile around Upper Buck. This time, did not pull out my camera, sorry; the uploaded photo dates back to ~1996.

The backpacking was a bit strenuous for me, but I am a beginner. The trails and lakes were very scenic. Most of all I enjoyed it and had fun with a nice group of people.

Here are the directions to the trailhead:
From Sonora, drive east on Highway 108, turn right on Crabtree Road and follow the signs to the Crabtree trailhead. The last portion of the road will be unpaved but in good condition.

    Hi,
I just talked w/ Theresa and am most likely to come and leave today. I'll be leaving from Castro Valley - if someone from here wants to join. Otherwise I'll try to meet w\ the group in Pleasanton.
Most likely to stay till Mon (will call Theresa closer to 4pm today). Shosh

Jan, Thanks for the update. The weather reports have been jumping around so it is a good idea to be prepared for all conditions. The National Weather Service is forecasting temps at Pinecrest in the high 70s for Sat and Sunday...it will be about 10 degrees cooler at Crabtree and slight chance of showers Sunday night and Monday. If you decide to join last minute, please meet us at the trailhead at 8 am on Saturday unless you are hiking in later with Alex.

To those joining last moment: I will be hiking in later on Saturday, starting from the trailhead about 1:30pm, you can join me. The rest of the group is camping at Crabtree overnight, walks early morning. In any case, if you join - contact Theresa ASAP to count you in the permit.

I'm in twain Harte right now & it's definitely chilly, so bring your winter gear. It drizzled a bit ysterdsy too. Assuming my car checks out this morning I'll be there sat am at the trailhead. I have to drive back to SF on Sunday night though [masked]

Hi folks--this trip sounds really fantastic, but trying to clear my schedule has proved more problematic than I had hoped, and I think I should stay in town. I might copy your trip plan for a future weekend. I hope you have a great time!

The ranger informed me that there are no traces of smoke but it does look like there is a cooling trend...so be prepared for the cooler temps. I was also informed that it is hunting season in the Emigrant Wilderness. Although most of the hunting takes place in the Kennedy Meadows area, we may run into a hunter. The ranger said that this is not a deterrent for backpackers and isn't an issue. I have backpacked in Kennedy Meadows on the opening day of hunting season and didn't run into hunters but want to keep you informed about this.

All, With so many people suggesting a Saturday - Monday trip, Teresa and I talked about it. What do the the people currently on the list feel about change the times. That also works better for me....

If you are not able to meet at the trailhead on Saturday morning you can meet us at Piute Lake. Last year I found a nice campsite across the lake from the trail that can accommodate a group. It is not visible from the trail but if you go to the opposite end of the lake, you'll see it. I'm hoping this site will be available for us.

    September 25, 2013

  • Theresa G

Yes, it looks like we will be shifting it to Saturday...driving up Friday night or very early Saturday morning are good options. I have two other guests that can't make it on Friday but would like to come up on Friday night or Saturday and the weather looks great Sat-Mon. I'll call the ranger station tomorrow to find out if they can leave permits outside the station for us to pick up. I would like to do the 14 mile hike on Sunday but people can do whatever they want to do...there are many lakes in the area that are only a few miles away.

O'kay, count me in! I'll take off NOT too early and track you down to the Piute lake camp, should get there before sunset the first day, Fri or Sat, as decided. If anyone feels the same, can meet and lead the late sleepers party. I am coming from San Jose South.

Hi! I'm not sure if I'll be able to make this, but I'll put myself on the list tentatively.

Douglas told me that there's talk of shifting it to Saturday through Monday, and that works better for me than Friday through Sunday. I'd lean toward driving late Friday night, after the worst of the traffic lets up, and camping at the trailhead. Crabtree is a very easy place to camp (tons of tent sites, an outhouse, and trash cans).

One thing I'd love to do on the in-between day is some exploration off-trail--picking a lake off the map with no trail to it and finding a way, or looking out across a valley and saying "it looks like you could follow that stream..." It'd be cool if folks wanted to do that with me, also cool if I did it on my own and knew I had some buddies who'd notice if I didn't turn up at camp afterwards. :-)

PS. I had already been contemplating an Emigrant trip the following weekend when I saw this, so if anybody wants to talk about that, drop me a line.

Agree with you about the day hike options. The idea of galloping 14mi in one go through such a beautiful area is kind of warping. I think, this is negotiable once we get there.

Very tempted to join, but question the schedule. With a short lunch in Sonora, it is a 4.5 hours drive from home. To hit the trail at 9:30, I would need to be kicked out of bed at 4am: this could be plain dangerous. I could, though, take off comfortably at 9am, arrive 1:30pm at the trailhead, and still meet you on the camp before dark, - it's about 3-3.5 hours hike. Could team up with somebody else who values morning sleep... Give me till the end of workday tomorrow to decide; meanwhile, keep planning as it goes. I can handle Fri-Sun or Sat-Mon, no problem.

Hello Theresa, This trip sounds interesting...I would like to carpool. Where exactly in Pleasanton shall we meet at on Friday morning?

    September 23, 2013

  • Theresa G

We are planning on leaving the trailhead by 9:30 a.m. The route from the Crabtree Trailhead will be Camp Lake to Piute Meadow to Piute Lake (8 miles). We will be camping there Friday and Saturday nights. On Saturday the plan is to hike (without our packs) to Gem Lake, Jewelry Lake and Deer Lake, Buck Lakes, Emigrant Lake loop (14 miles). We will be hiking out the Grouse Lake/Pine Valley route on Sunday. If you would like to carpool, we will be meeting in Pleasanton.
