Snow Mountain Wilderness Backpacking

This wilderness area is lightly traveled and very rugged. It's immense beauty is complemented by the trout bearing streams only accessible by foot trail(bring your fly fishing poles!). I need a group (3-4 folks who are willing to backpack with a mature 18 year old) of experienced nature loving packers to accompany me out here for 2 nights.

Group Size:

7 People with some backcountry experience and good hiking ability.

Transportation:

Would prefer if we arranged a carpool of some sort in order to save fossil fuels.

Food:

2 nights -- Saturday and Sunday night!

Saturday - Lunch/Dinner

Sunday - Break/Lunch/Dinner

Monday - Breakfast/possibly lunch

Meals will be all individual, when we all get there and pack our packs, we may decide to consolidate stoves.

Hoping to do one night of freeze dried meals and the rest cooked up fresh, like pasta w/pesto and tuna, or brown rice and beans. Breakfasts may be individual cold stuff with communal tea and hot oats. Thinking dried fruit, multigrain crackers and real cheese(in block form), for lunches.

Thanks for open the spot. I really would have liked to go(past tense for a future event ?) but thought I would NEVER have been selected so I made other plans. I have reserved a five day campsite in the Eldarodo (sp ) wilderness to do some trout fishing near Loon lake.

I was really looking forward to this hike, but now I have to work this Saturday.

Please comment hear if you will need to carpool!

Also, I drive a Toyota Prius, which may not enjoy driving on a bumpy dirt road. Does anyone know if can avoid the nasty roads by going to certain trailhead?

If not, then we may need to travel there in 4 wheel drive vehicles.

This is a fun convenient spot to backpack! You guys will have a nice time. It seems early enough that there should still be water in the springs. Watch out for rattle snakes though!

Ok so here's what I'm thinkin for the route:

Saturday: arrive by 10 am latest and get hiking
    Approx 8-9 miles
Summit springs to milk ranch loop too crooked tree.
    Sunday: 7-8 miles
Hike down Crockett trail a bit to waterfall, make way back on north ridge trail to milk ranch loop. Summit east or west peak. Camp on peak depending on weather and crowds
    Monday- about 5 miles
Make way back to trailhead via east peak and overlook trail. Early morning to get back to bay area by mid day.
I will call the ranger station tomorrow to find out about current water availability and will change route accordingly.

The route is fairly challenging! There will be lots of climbing! What are your food plans? What do you think of the route?

There are enough folks on the waitlist that it would be awesome if someone organized another trip!

Hey y'all. I was just out there brushing the dixie/deafy glade and bathhouse trails and remembered someone had asked about water. I thought there was plenty in the streams and springs for backpacking purposes, but I can't vouch for higher up. Watch out for ticks and poison oak. Have fun!

That's good to hear! What exactly was your route? Did you feel that any of the streams nearby the trails were fishable? I know the main fishing stream in the park is only accessible by descending a steep canyon.

I couldn't say, but you could try calling the ranger stations in Willows or Stonyford. I think they're pretty used to that sort of question... Best of luck!

Hi there, in case it's helpful to anyone here, I'm testing a service to help people borrow camping equipment for free from friends and neighbors. If you need any gear for this trip, visit http://borrows.herokuapp.com and signup! I'll be sure to get you a log-in ASAP =)

Hi. How many miles a day approximately?

    April 11, 2014

    • Matthew B.

Soory for the late response -- We will be hiking around 8 miles a day with a max of 10 miles per day. This also Depends on the group

Allright folks. Here's an update. in the interest of keeping the trek small I will select 4 People who seem reasonably experienced. And the rest will be waitlisted. although I am all for introducing newbies to backpacking. This is not the trip for beginners. This is a trip where we all experience the wilderness together, look after ourselves, and enjoy each others company at the fireside each night. So if you are serious about going on this trip then please message me and tell me about your experience level and why you want to go.

For the record, you are a human. Of what gender I know not. But that's also sexist.

Hey folks take it easy! We can save all this talk for the trail. Lets keep this page to logistical talk please. I'm ok with having a low key quietdog along. I love dogs as well.

  • Matthew B.

More info about transportation, food, communal group gear, potential costs, and other logistical items will be posted by April 19th! Stay tuned.

have backpacked here (on deafy glade trail) . would love to go again. Wonderful place. The road going in is rough. (at least going in the southern entry). I wouldn't do it again in anything but a rugged vehicle. I was in a little sedan and it was ridiculous!

What time of year were you there, and how was it finding water?

      March 30, 2014

  • Matthew B.

Alright-14 people ey? If that many people really want to go, then we could organize 2 different treks, but I was hoping to keep it quiet with around 3-4 people.
As we get a little closer to the end of the month, I will post more details about trails and whatnot. Would definitely like to have an experienced fly fisherman along to show me a few things!

It's not an easy hike. You might also want to join the meetup group California Backpackers Club. They organize trips for beginning backpackers.

Sounds fun! I'm interested. Do you have an itinerary? How many miles do you want to do?

    March 30, 2014

    • Matthew B.

Im awaiting a Topo map in the mail before I decide on miles but I want to around eight miles a day depending on the group. I also want to set aside a good bit of time to fish

OPS. wrong venue: thought you were referring to snow creek trail above Teniha(spelling) creek in Yosemite valley. SNOW MOUNTAIN WILDERNESS?
