Point Reyes Coast Camp

I booked a group site for 20 people. Trip priority goes to those who were on the original trip.

COST BREAKDOWN

$3 BUCKS PER PERSON PERMIT ($50 TOTAL /17 PEOPLE = 2.94 OR THEREABOUTS)

ANY GAS MONEY TO DRIVER IF YOU CAR POOL

Will be meeting at 9.30 am at the Visitor Center at Bear Valley and proceed with the approximate 8 mile hike to coast camp choosing 1 of several options.  I would like to leave no latter than 9.45 am.   I will be picking up permit at 9 am when center opens.

Upon arrival at camp spot, people are free to do what they want.

My son had to back out.

One other thing I am considering, I personally like some distance while backpacking.  There are many options in Point Reyes from 2 to 8 to whatever you want to do.   Is there an interest in say the first day doing about 19-23 miles.  That route would be from Bear Valley South along Rift Trail, to some trails that then cut over to Coast Trail near Wildcat.   There would be one nice climb from the 5 brooks area toward the coast.  Again, I am open, I did this route to sky camp the last time i was at point reyes and it was about 19 miles and including stop for snack, it took me about 6 hours.

Like other event hosts, I tend to be less a leader, a hey let's go.   I encourage everyone to do what is comfortable for them as far as what they carry, bring, pace, all of that.

I have asked Tomoko, and if she can't join us, I am hoping someone else would be willing to "lead" a secondary group.  My thoughts are that with 20 of us, we can split off into 2 or more groups, the faster, let's hike and get set up group and the photographer, more leisurely paced group.  Also the second group can choose there own route to Coast Camp since there are multiple means, even as far as doing the easiest 2 mile route from the Hostel.

The fee will be collected at site and will vary with group total. I paid 50 bucks for the permit so it  will be paid for amongst the participants divided by group total...so about 2-5 bucks each,  depending on group size.

Will be hiking out via coast trail and arch rock sunday morning.

i did thanks and with a family emergency on sunday it was a good thing i only did the day trip, still, nothing better than trekking with a group. especially when there are masked bandits! those coons are pros, you can't leave your food alone for a split second without putting it back in the vault and completely closing it.

Michael, I decided not to climb Mt Shasta this weekend due to gust wind up to 70mph on Sun. So I'll join you. I'll take a look at Topo map tonight to decide which route I'd like to take. My quick thought would be to hit Mt Witterberg via Witterberg trail, then, Fire Lane Trail to reach Coast Camp. Set up tent, leave some gear in the tent. Some can be rest there w/o hiking anymore. After then, I'll continue the Coast Trail toward Arch Rock. Come back to Campsite via Baldy Trail & Woodward Valley Tr. Haven't summed up the total mileage yet.

I don't think I can participate in a shuttle run to Palomarin; I've got Billy and Saurabh with me. I'm pretty flexible about the route and mileage and can figure it out in the morning.

NOAA weather forecast at Point Reyes. It's a bit windy on both Sat/Sun. Please make sure to bring windproof jacket. http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lon=-122.88085&lat=38.04796#.U3aW_JHoaX0

point reyes does have a lot of ways to get to coast camp. is there a general time people would like to convene at the end? with the options to split and trek different routes, there is the potential that some people could arrive at the site between 3-6 hours. or 30 mins if you take the hostel route =)

For first timers going to point reyes, give yourself an extra half hour to account for the backroads between san rafael and point reyes. avoid taking hwy 1 going in, it takes a heck of a lot longer. scenic on the way out.

Would this be good for a beginner? I would love to go, but don't have much experience backpacking.

    May 14, 2014

    • ajai

Yes i echo christine's sentiments; is this okay for a beginner?

      May 16, 2014

    • Oliver

I think this is a great trip for beginners since there are toilets and water at the site. It is a large enough group that you can get advice and help with gear. One member is going on the short route, 2 miles, so if you feel better later you can explore the area after you set up camp.

I am driving from Mill Valley and will need a parking permit. I am happy to pick up anyone along the way.

I will drive, thanks for getting parking

Hello there! Sorry for the late notification. I was hoping for someone to carpool, and coordinate gear with. I can drive there from San Francisco, or join someone else's carpool. I have a stove, water purification, and a small two person tent. The tent might be a bit too cozy, but we can share the Jetboil and the water purification.

    May 15, 2014

    • Saurabh G.

Hey Michelle, you can borrow my jetboil for sure. I *believe* I have sufficient fuel for a couple of days.

    Hi All,

I'm planning to do the shorter Limantour route. I'll be meeting up with you guys at Bear Valley to get a parking permit and then heading over to the hostel. If anyone wants to do the shorter route, I'm happy to have fellow hikers.

    May 15, 2014

  • billy t.

too late? I didn't see this until now.

    May 14, 2014

  • Mike

I'm assuming we don't want one tent per person. How would we like to split things up?

I can bring a 3 person or a 4 person tent. I'd be happy to not bring either, or to carry a portion of another person's tent as well.

    May 14, 2014

  • Deven D.

I've joined but if anyone from the pervious trip wants to go I will give up my spot.

    May 14, 2014

  • Mike

    Thanks, Michael!

Bummer. When I saw the trip was cancelled I made other plans. Next time.
