Rae Lakes Loop, June 22-28

I have 3 available spots on my permit for Rae Lakes Loop starting from Bubbs Creek from June 22 to 28.

The plan will be to get to Cedar Grove on the 21st and camp in one of the campgrounds there for the night. Start out on the morning of the 22nd. Spend 7 days / 6 nights on the trail. The loop itself is 42 miles, and we will try to do some side trips: Sixty Lakes Basin, Lake Reflection, etc. Get back to where we started from by the 28th and head home.

Glen Pass (approx 12000') is currently covered in snow. We will have to look at the trail conditions before we start and evaluate our plans so please be flexible.

There are plenty of fishing opportunities so bring your fishing gear! Bear cannisters are required. Look here for other details:

http://www.nps.gov/seki/planyourvisit/rae-lakes-loop.htm

This is not a good first or second trip. You really need to have your gear well worked out. Don't be fooled by the low miles since 1) thats just the main loop, and we will certainly do a couple of side trips off of it and cover about 10 mi / day on average, and 2) we will climb from 5000' to 12000' and back again, not counting the side trips.

I'm going to setup a waiting list and will do a lottery if I get more than 4 people interested.

Guys! I finally posted my photos! They absolutely pale in comparison to the actual beauty of the Loop (& Chris's photos), but I'm rather proud of them :O)

Omi, TY for organizing this trip. It was really breathtaking & I appreciated the humor, grace & kindness that I observed btwn yourself & the group members. I learned a lot more than how to streamline my gear & food for JMT.

Chris, TY for saving our asses on the last night & scouting ahead & finding a most excellent camp spot. I woulda cried if we had to go back to Wood's Creek!

Nick, TY for your companionship & your 'naked' enthusiasm for nature ;)

Lisa, TY for your tuna & rice-a-roni!

Hey Omi! I'm so excited about the trip. Thank you for organizing! I was wondering how carpooling will work out. I'm in the East Bay. I can drive or park and ride. Please advise!

Lisa, I just tried sending you an email through the system and it said your email address was no good. maybe a glitch?
I was wondering what day/time might be good for you, Omni and I to get together before the trip to chat? My schedule is pretty open.

I actually have a pretty busy week ahead of me. It might be possible to meet late in the evening (8pm?) one of these days. Lets coordinate as much as possible on email.

I have a 2009 Honda Civic, can fit four, but with gear even that might be pushing it.

I did the loop counterclockwise on the first weekend in June. There wasn't much snow but there was enough on the Rae Lakes side of Glen Pass to make for some fun glissading(yes I had an axe). Not sure it will still be there towards the end of the month. Also there were many PCT thru hikers going down it in tennis shoes(not glissading). Have a great trip !

    • Omi

Thanks for the report, David! Yeah the snow between Glen Pass and the lakes is a concern, but if PCTers are doing it in tennis shoes, then perhaps it shouldn't be. I'll certainly be chatting with the rangers about this before we finalise our plans.

No news from Ivy, so Lisa you can keep that spot, and all spots are now filled! Next week we can finalize carpool arrangements.

    June 11, 2014

  • Omi

Dennis and Guomin didn't respond so I'm moving down the list. Nicholas has already signed up.

Ivy, are you still interested in joining us?

Lisa - sorry about the confusion, but you signed up in Ivys spot. I had put a note in the description about not signing up unless you were on the list below. If Ivy responds by tomorrow morning I'll have to ask you to give up your spot (for a full refund). If she doesn't, you're on the trip and we're done.

I wish meetup supported our lottery/confirmation deposit system better.

Ok, the random bowl has spoken:

Clara, Dennis, and Guomin: Please sign up by Tuesday (6/10) morning by paying the commitment deposit ($21). If I don't hear from you, I'll move down the rest of the list:

    Nicholas, Ivy.

If you have questions about the commitment deposit, take a look at this post:

    http://www.meetup.com/the-other-original-bay-area-backpack-meetup/messages/boards/thread/19916922

Or just ask here. In a nutshell, its to encourage people to only commit to a trip if they really plan on going. When you attend, you get your deposit back.
