Got plans for New Years? Let’s explore Death Valley National Park, and bring in the New Year over champagne and a toasty campfire!
Wed, Dec 28th—Drive to Stovepipe Wells Campground, Death Valley National Park.
Thur, Dec 29th—Early drive to Badwater Basin to trek a ways into the salt flats. Late morning/afternoon hike from Golden Canyon to Zabriskie Point and back. Pre-sunset hike into the Mesquite Flat Dunes. Return to Stovepipe Wells Campground for campfire, potluck, and drinks.
Fri, Dec 30th—Drive to Eureka Dunes, the tallest sand dunes in California. We’ll spend the day hiking and playing in them! Drive to/set up camp at a primitive campsite near Racetrack Playa. Possibly do a night hike to get our first glimpse of the moving rocks, as well as stellar views of the stars and Milky Way.
Sat, Dec 31st—Enjoy sunrise, breakfast, and more exploration of Racetrack Playa area. Leave by mid-day, head to Panamint Springs Campground. The afternoon will be open to hiking, perhaps in the Darwin Canyon area. In the evening, we’ll sit around a roaring campfire and toast to the New Year!
Sun, Jan 1st—Possible morning hike, then head home.
Due to campsite restrictions, the group size will be 8. There are five spaces available. If sign-ups exceed the number of spaces, we will use a lottery system to select participants. Please join the wait list. The lottery will be held Sunday, November, 20th.
If you are selected by lottery, there will be a $25 deposit for this trip. Once the lottery is held on Sunday, November 20th, I will notify winners by email. This email will also contain instructions as to how you can pay the $25 deposit via PayPal. If you show up for the event, you will get a full refund (minus any campsite fees) back at the trailhead. This fee is not refundable if you forfeit, don’t show up, or fail to communicate.
Four wheel drive vehicles are required for portions of this trip, specifically to Eureka Dunes and Racetrack Playa. In your RSVP, please note whether you have 4WD (and are willing to drive) or whether you are willing to pitch in for a group rental. We must come to a group consensus/effort on this.
Expect comfortable daytime temps, cold nights, and possible rain. Average temps in December usually stay between 39F—65F. Precipitation average is still somewhat low this time of year. In any case, please be prepared.
