Havasupai Backpacking trip, Grand Canyon, May 11-15

Havasupai, Grand Canyon, Arizona This trip is an adventure deep into the Indian territory (reservation), a once in a life time opportunity, and extremely difficult to reserve. I literally have had to call close to a 100 times in order to make the reservation for the campground in May. See this link for pictures, etc.: http://www.google.com/search?q=havasupai+falls&hl=en&rls=com.microsoft:en-us:IE-SearchBox&rlz=1I7ADFA_en&prmd=imvns&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=lIA5T7q8J-KP0AXvupilAg&ved=0CFUQsAQ&biw=1004&bih=624

Known as the Garden of Eden in the desert, Havasu Falls is one of the most well-known, and majestic waterfalls in the world. As the crowning glory of the Havasupai Indian Reservation, this breathtaking attraction is found at the bottom of the Grand Canyon near Supia, Arizona. Backpacking into the hot, jungle atmosphere in the middle of the desert isn’t your average day-hike in California!! Our plan is to backpack to the falls (10 miles), stay there for 3-4 nights, on second and third day to dayhike to other nearby falls, and perhaps to the junction of Colorado river and back (8 miles each day) and finally 10 miles back up on the fourth day. The plan would be to fly to Phoenix on May the 10th, drive to trailhead, start our hike on the 11th, finally return on the 15th. More details TBD. There are a few of us who have already committed to the trip. I am looking for a few experienced, FUN, and organized backpackers who want to join us. Once we have a group determined, I can send out more details about Airplane tickets, where to stay the night before, etc. TO SIGN UP: 1) Please add your name to the waiting list. 2) Send me an e-mail with your past backpacking experience, and places you have been. 3) I will reply to you with a set of further instructions regarding the fee, etc. Once I receive the fee, I will add you to the YES list. If there are too many people who would want to go, we will have to do a lottery.  This trip should be a lot of fun.  Ali

Wow!! what an amazing place it was!! Probably the most amzing place I have ever seen. Thank you all for sharing this wonderful trip with me. Overall, we did 40-46 miles of hiking in the canyon with close to 5k feet of elevation in 4 days!! So not bad! The falls were just breathtaking and the swiming in the pools was just fantastic. I run out of words that describe the beauty of this area.
We had a great group. I loved getting the opportunity to learn more about you all, and share this memorable trip with you. I had a great time, and hope you did too. Looking forward to our future adventures. Thanks again!

I've been to Havasupai twice and think it is one of the most beautiful places in the country . Enjoy the trip , and try to find the green room if it's still around . Also don't miss the day hike down to the Colorado !

Permits for this trip are almost impossible to obtain. Getting permits is going to be the most difficult task.

    how can I join?

I would like to join. Given that there is such a long waitlist, can we arrange multiple groups of 10 people? say for May 16 - 20? Is there a limit for 10 people per group?

I've done this hiking trip twice, and once before they even had portable bathrooms down by the campsite, you actually had to go all natural. :-) You don't see the Grand Canyon the same afterwards. I'm on the waiting list but would love to hook up with carpooling if I make it.

Very cool Matt! Got to hook up for a trip!

Matt, that sounds great! I'm not a member of Santa Cruz Transplants (yet) but I'll check it out :)

I am down for sure too Matt if I get moved to attending. Share expenses or what ever. This will be great.

Hi Lucie, sounds good. I am also planning a Yosemite Waterfall viewing trip in April with my Meetup group (Santa Cruz Transplants) if you are interested in that. I will also be posting backpacking meetups in Yosemite, Kings Canyon, and Sequoia NP this summer through that group too.

Matt, I'm on the waiting list too, but if I (we) happen to be moved to the 'going' list, I'd love to take you up for the offer and be a part of your car-crew :)

I'm on the waitlist but if I get moved up to the "ATTENDING" list then I can take 3 other people with me. I live in the Bay Area and would drive to this event in my 4-Runner. I can take people from the Bay Area or pick them up if they are on the way (or not too far off the beaten path).

I've done this trip before. I'd recommend flying to Las Vegas and renting a SUV. Let me know if you'd like any info.

This trip will take 4 days hiking, bakpacking plus one-two days of travel. Min 5 days total. The 5th day will be a long day since we have to hike back up (10 miles) then drive to Phoenix, catch a flight/ride back.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
