Yosemite, Tenaya Lake to Ten Lakes, Memorial Day Weekend.

  • May 26, 2012 · 10:00 AM

This is a moderate trip of about 20 miles starting at Tenaya Lake and exiting at Ten Lakes trailhead, Saturday 26th to Monday 28th.

Saturday: drive to Yosemite, pickup permit, set up the car shuttle, and then a short hike (about 4 miles, elevation gain 500 ft) to Polly Dome lakes for the 1st night.

Sunday: about 11 miles rollercoaster (up 1100 ft, down 1500 ft, then up 1200 ft!) to Ten Lakes basin, camp the 2nd night.

Monday: about 6 miles (mostly down) to the trailhead exit.

This is a relatively short trip, but since it's still early in the season expect some snow covered trails, high stream crossing, and downed trees, so you should be comfortable with those obstacles. Bear canisters are required.

Tioga pass and hwy 120 are open. Last week Yosemite felt more like July than May.

My permit is for a total of 6 people. For now RSVP is open for the waiting list only. If more than 6 people sign up, I will run a lottery early next week, and the first 5 people on the lottery list will be moved to the yes list. A deposit of $20 will be required to attend the trip, that will be refunded at the trailhead minus the permit fees (about $6 per person).

It was a good trip with great company and interesting stories. Unfortunately, trail conditions didn't allow us to make it all the way to Ten Lakes. Snow coverage with steep slopes (all north facing slopes above 9000 ft are still covered with snow) and hard to find trail in some places, made it a bit sketchy to hike it all the way. Yet, we had 2 good nights in Yosemite, with fresh air, great views, and subfreezing temperature!

I appreciate it if people on the Yes list would confirm their spot by getting back to me, and the people on the waiting list would update their RSVP if they are not interested in this trip anymore. Thanks.

The first 5 people on this list will be moved to the Yes list, and you must confirm your spot by Wednesday 6 pm. I will send an email to the first 5 with instructions on how to confirm your spot. If I don’t hear from you by then I will drop you off the list. I will move down the list as people are dropped off or if they have changed there plans.

If for any reason your plans have changed for that weekend, please take a minute to update your RSVP, in order to allow to the others to move up in

I've changed the RSVP close date to Monday 14th, and will do the lottery then. That would give enough time for people to clear up their plans for the long weekend.

Oops! It's Memorial Day weekend, my mistake. Thanks Peter for catching it.

There was a bit of hail last weekend, but it was quite warm during the day. Most of the snow was above 9,000 ft.

Try to stay out of the Valley on Memorial Day weekend. Traffic jams can cost you an hour or more getting in, and almost as much getting out.
