Aristotle Deep Dive

This series of Thinkers Club meetings will make a close, careful reading of Aristotle's central works, starting with Physics in June, continuing later with On the Soul and Metaphysics. On the third Wednesday each month we'll meet at the thought-friendly Phoenix Coffee House in Cleveland Heights to help ourselves understand and enjoy it. We'll follow the same format as Thinkers Club meetings in Twinsburgh, except we'll be in the Heights, start at 7:30, and have comfy chairs and couches.

Aristotle is for anyone who wants to think about really big stuff in challenging new ways. In the Physics, Aristotle confronts questions like what is Being, what is Change, and how can Being give rise to Change? What are Time and Space? What is a Cause? What is the relation between Reality, Mathematics and Language? You may be startled to see how unique and provocative Aristotle's answers are.

If you've found Aristotle confusing or dull it could be because you read a translation based more on Latin versions of Aristotle than on Greek. Words like "substance", "essense", "activity" and "state" come from Latin and often distort Aristotle's meaning. To counteract this your meeting organizer SirEel will use the translations of Joe Sachs, who always renders Greek into English without Latinisms and provides enormously helpful commentaries and glossaries. All of Sachs's translations are available on Amazon and other online bookstores. You can find his translation of Phyics here: http://tinyurl.com/re....

For the July 15 meeting please read as much of the Physics as you can, but at least Books I to IV. If you get the Sachs edition try to read the introduction, the glossary, and all the intermediate commentaries.

Note: The parking lot behind the Phoenix has meters, but you can park free on nearby side streets.

We hope to see you!
