For March, the Thinkers' Club ventures into Eastern philosophy with The Art of War, one of the oldest books in Chinese (and hence world) literature. Written in the 6th century B.C., The Art of War provides practical advice for military leaders, yet it raises the deep philosophical questions about war and conflict from an ancient Chinese perspective. Is war inevitable, or could the world exist without it? Can military strength promote peace? Is there a difference between just and unjust war? Are ethical duties owed to enemies? What role should a military play in the rest of civil society? Do any of these questions have different answers today than they did in the past?
