Con of the North 2013: Games Convention Running Feb. 15 to Feb. 17th

What is Con of the North?

Con of the North is a volunteer run non-profit organization designed solely for the purpose of fostering a sense of community among gamers, promoting the hobby of gaming, and providing the gaming community with the best possible environment to present their games.

What is a Games Convention?

A games convention is a gathering of people (usually annual) where everyone gets together to have a good time. This is accomplished in general by playing games and participating in other activities.

The games played at a convention are very wide ranging. Role playing games (such as AD&D or Call of Cthulhu), collectable card games (Magic), war games (World in Flames), board games (Settlers of Catan), miniatures games (Warhammer 40K), computer games (Starcraft), and many more.

In order to participate in the games you just register for the convention and then sign up for games, either in advance (by pre-registering), or at the convention.

New or inexperienced players are usually welcome to play or watch as they prefer.

Other activities at a games convention include costume events, auctions, volunteering, hanging out and talking, going without enough sleep and other good times.

Hey gang, sorry for the last minute change. We're gonna meet at Fantasy Flight Games at around 5:30. The price at Con is just too expensive. I'm still planning to go on Sunday.

Can you make it on Friday around 5:00?

In case anyone is interested, here's the update e-mail I received from one of the Con staff. (redacted for privacy & clarity)

    Mr. Haukoos,

You can bring your games to Con of the North any day you show up!

You can check the book online to see who is running games at 3:00 or later. As for the vendors, they determine when they want to close down and leave, so i can't tell you who will still be at the Convention after 3:00

If there are tickets available you will be able to join in a game. If not, talk to the Judge running the game. Hope this helps!

Hi! I'm new to the Con & am planning to go on Sunday around 3:15. Would I be able to bring my own games to play? What events, vendors etc will be around in case I just wanna walk around? Would I be able to join in on a game? What else would I need to know? Thanks!

    Sincerely,

    Chris Haukoos

This matches what I found out from a new friend that attended my last Taylor game night, Kevin who used to coordinate the Con, and still attends frequently said, "Yes - there are usually tables free in a number of areas. The con staff has a book listing all of the tables and events, and can assign tables on the fly. There's also a board for posting pickup games. The idea is to make it easy to grab a table and find players."

I'm going to go on Sunday. Tickets should be $22 for the day. I expect to arrive around 3:00-3:30. Would anyone like to meet me at that time?

Certainly; but since we preregistered; we will not know what gaming sessions we already have tickets for until we pick up our registration packet on Saturday morning. We'll be bringing a few games of our own in case we did not get the slots we want and prefer some ad-hoc games.

My wife (Alicia) and I will be at COTN, we are staying at the hotel overnight. It would be great to meet some of the people from the Tribe who are into gaming and other geek things.

I picked up a flyer from Fantasy Flight Games that says if you pre-register before January 5, 2013, it is only $25 for a whole weekend of fun and games. I also have a book that lists the schedule for all the games being played over the weekend. It is too large to post on this site however.
