Message from Eric
Aspiring writers have expressed disappointment at the writing courses they took with some local brand name authors as well as on-line courses offered by impressive overseas outfits.
My opinion is, a good author does not necessarily make a good instructor - two different skill sets.
Before you enroll for a writing course - read the books written by these authors/instructors. It will be quite revealing, I assure you. If your course instructor has not written a book - well...
Another ploy used by some instructors, including the brand name ones is: they are "working" on their first novel. Well, anyone who has written a novel will know the discipline that involves. Moreover, it is easy to write a short story. But a novel demands special story-telling skills to keep the reader engaged over 60,000 words or more.
As for the institutes, ask them for testimonials from their former students who are now published authors. Most will go silent. If they do offer testimonials, check out the books written by their former students.
You owe it to yourself to do some due diligence. It's not only the money - but your time - something that you cannot recover.
The same goes for my courses. Before you enroll, read any of my books. If they do not work for you - keep looking for another author/mentor.
22 April 2016 - This is NOT a plug to get you to buy my books. I don't sell books for a living. I write because I love playing with words and bringing thoughts and ideas to life.
