I’ve been a Barbie® designer for 12 years, and I was recently inspired to create a line of dolls that would serve as role models for girls in the African-American community. As a mother of a five-year-old
daughter, everyday I see and understand the importance of providing positive play experiences for girls.
While there are some African-American dolls already on the market, I have yet to see a comprehensive line that authentically represents the physical aesthetics of African-American women, while still being
inspirational and something moms feel good about. I’ve created the So In Style™ dolls because I want African-American girls to know that dolls can also represent their career aspiration, hobbies and ethnic backgrounds. It was also imperative to me to design big and little sisters together to teach girls the importance of mentoring.
I enjoyed playing with Barbie® until I was 13 years old, and I’m so happy that I now get to re-experience that same joy by watching my daughter play with Barbie® dolls. I truly believe that Barbie® has
inspired my daughter to be anything — a teacher, chef or a designer. Barbie® is a brand moms and girls trust and have grown up with, so I felt it was very important for these dolls to be connected to Barbie®.
I believe that “A happy inspired childhood creates happy, inspired, powerful women.”
Barbie® inspired me to realize my dream of becoming a designer, and I want my new So In Style™ dolls to allow girls to play, create, and aspire to live out their dreams in a way that is authentic to our community and culture.
