Who is your favourite fictional detective?

Don't have one yet, see above!

In your opinion, which period of crime fiction writing is the most interesting?

I have only read contemporary crime fiction so far, but would like to try books from other periods.

Introduction

I started reading crime fiction a year or so ago, when Harlan Coben was recommended to me. Having now read almost every book of his I'm looking to discover some other authors!
