Kayak Camping on the Mullica River

OK, I'm dying to camp, so let's do a trip I've been thinking about for a while!  We are going to kayak camp along the Mullica River!

We'll meet at noon at Bel Haven Paddlesports to consolidate kayaks onto Meri's trailer and other multi-kayak capable transports.  We will leave as many cars as possible at Bel Haven.  We'll then shuttle up to Atsion Lake for the Mullica River put in.  We'll paddle leisurely down the Mullica, passing lots of wildlife, run the beaver dam rapids, and arrive at the Mullica River Campsite.

We'll camp overnight, and then head out sometime in late morning to finish the paddle down to Bel Haven.  We'll take out at Bel Haven and shuttle back to the Atsion vehicles.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

1.  I have booked one group campsite that holds 6 people/2 tents.  I am assuming Wondermutt will take up one slot, so I have 4 others left.  Leave a comment if you want to share with us (bring your own tent :)  )  First come, first serve.

2.  As of right now, there is one other group site that holds 6 people available at this campground.  I recommend booking quickly!

3.  This is a paddle in/paddle out site.  You must be able to transport all your gear and food in your kayak.

4.  These are primitive campsites.  There are pit toilets and potable water available though.

5.  This trip will be held rain or shine, with the exception of severe weather.  Any cancellations will be made by 8am the day of the paddle.

6.  This trip is run by the DVK, not Bel Haven, they are simply kind enough to let us use the parking lot. :)

Required Gear:

PFD (no exceptions, must be worn at all times)

Tent and other camping gear

Food/Water

Recommended Gear:

Sunscreen

Insect repellent

Other Notes:

Camping spots are limited, and you may only camp if you have a confirmed spot at one of the two possible campsites.

Map of the area: The entire paddle takes 7-9 hours - plan on paddling 3-4 hours each day.

Meri can be reached the day of the paddle at[masked] (text preferred since I'm mildly phone-phobic. :) )

Jean, looks like you will be the second tent on my site M008. Site cost was $30, so splitting the cost would be welcome.

Meri, to clarify, we are 5 kayakers, you reserved 2-6 person sites and there are no more sites. Do we need a stategy for tents and sleeping arrangements with a consensus or do we wing it? How many tents, I can bring one or two and share expences. Can I bring my nephew,he's 23 and has kayak/boating/is a life guard with experience.

    May 27, 2013

    • Meri

never mind, just saw Nikki can't come so I have room for 4 more. :)

      May 28, 2013

    • Meri

(and since I may need to pitch my hammock elsewhere depending on trees, I'm sure we can fit 5 as long as people get cozy in tents. ;) )

I am considering doing this. All I have is a 14 foot pungo. Is that too large for this trip?

    May 27, 2013

    • Meri

14 foot is ok, but I don't recommend anything longer.

I have a small 2 person tent that I could bring and share though it will be, um, intimate.

    May 27, 2013

  • Denise E

INFO - Mullica is twisty and narrow in spots, so 14' kayak is longest recommended. My site is M008, I have 9x7 tent, sharing with Diane D. Have room in my tent for one more. One other tent allowed on my site with 3 or 4 people, depending if third person is in my tent. Please post who will bring 2nd tent and who will be in it, along with available spots.

    May 27, 2013

  • Diane D.

I am not familiar with the Mullica. Any suggestions for suitable boat length/type?

    May 26, 2013

  • Nikki

I am completely confused about camping site availability. Is there space for a tent at either of the 2 6-person sites reserved?

    May 26, 2013

    • Meri

I have space on my site

      May 26, 2013

  • Brian

    Have to cancel, graduation parties.

    May 26, 2013

  • Meri

Just uploaded a map of the area- it can also be found here: http://www.belhavenpaddlesports.com/images/rental_map_10.jpg

Trip is 7-9 hours long for the full length - plan to paddle 3-4 hours per day.

We'll be paddling around 12-15 miles total.

    May 13, 2013

  • Denise D

I backed out because I don't think that I am experienced enough to paddle more than about 5 miles, and my boat is slow so I don't want to be a burden for you amazing experienced kayakers. I'll get there someday!

    May 12, 2013

  • Denise E

Diane, you are in. Meri and I reserved the last 2 sites. Each site can have up to 6 people, but only 2 tents. That is why we're sharing tents. We'll just all rough it together. You're welcome to share my tent.

    May 10, 2013

    • Diane D.

Thanks Denise!! Woo hooo! Sounds fun!

      May 11, 2013

  • Diane D.

Mildly confused :-( ...if I say I'm coming, does that mean I have a space to camp? Or is there something else I need to do? Tks.

    May 10, 2013

  • A'gota / A.

Meri, how many miles /day. thanks A'gi

    May 10, 2013

  • Diane D.

I guess I will share a tent? I have a one person tent I can bring if there is a place to put it.

Just a heads up. The Appalachian Mountain Club is running this same trip at the same time.

    May 10, 2013

  • Meri

Denise, thanks for grabbing the other site! I'm on M006. 14 foot is fine, wouldn't recommend much longer than that since the river can be twisty and narrow.

    May 10, 2013

  • Denise E

Site M008 is reserved for 6 people in my name. I will share my tent with two people: sleeping bags and mats only. (May need help transporting some gear since my tent will be larger. ALL SITES ARE BOOKED! Meri's site and my site will accommodate 6 people each.

Meri, any problem with my 14' kayak? It holds more gear.

    May 10, 2013

  • Denise E

Meri, what is your site #. I'll pickup the other site for 6 people and will have a tent that sleeps 2. (Someone can choose to share my tent)

    May 10, 2013

  • Meri

Andrew - who cares? We're cooler than them. ;)

    1 · May 10, 2013

  • Meri

Denise, I already booked the 6 person campsite, so you don't need to book anything unless you want to grab the last group site so we can fit 6 more people. The link is in the description, and it was around $27 for the night for 6 people total.

    May 10, 2013

  • Denise E

Question...Who do I call to make reservations? Also, I may be able to fit one other person in my tent **I will have to dry fit it in my kayak first**

    May 10, 2013

  • Meri

Bernadette, the campsite is paddle/hike in only. There is no access via motor vehicle.

    May 10, 2013

  • Meri

    Sounds good to me, Denise!

    May 10, 2013

  • Denise E

Hi Meri, I'll be the 2nd tent on your site if that is okay.

    May 10, 2013

  • Bernadette

I Sounds like fun. I would love to do the trip. Is it possible to meet at the campsite and put in for day 2 paddle only? Asking since I am unsure how far apart cars/shuttle etc would be. if anyone can only do day two may we could shuttle ourselves?
