Batsto River Paddle

Short description:

  • Batsto River, 7 miles, 3-4 hours on water.  4-6 hours total time.
  • Short plastic boats good.
  • Meeting at Batsto lake, shuttle required on sand roads.
  • Bring lunch.

Long description:

Join us for a paddle on the Batsto River in Wharton State Forest.  We will be meeting at Batsto Lake (the take out), loading up cars and shuttling boats/people up to the Batsto River launch on Quakerbridge Rd.  The shuttle is a long one (30 minutes?), with part of the drive on sand roads.  We will paddle the 7 miles downstream to Batsto Lake, with a stop for lunch somewhere along the way.  The trip should take about 3-4 hours on the water, plus extra time for shuttles.  You should pack beverages and a lunch.

This trip is suitable for all skill levels and boat sizes though the stumps in the lake might make it unsuitable for a fibreglass boat if you are trying to avoid scratches and holes.  Shorter boats make the twisty parts of the trip easier, but if you are good at turning your boat you can certainly do it with a longer boat.  As with all DVK paddles a PFD (life vest) must be worn.

Trip cancellations due to thunder/high winds will be posted by 7:00am on the day of the paddle.  Meri can be reached via cell phone at 856.308.1974.

Directions to Batsto Lake from the highly recommended book Quiet Water New Jersey and Eastern Pennsylvania:

From Route 30, drive 6.5 miles on Route 542 East to where the road bends sharply to the right.  At the bend you will see the wood split-rail fence that surrounds Batsto Historical Village.  Drive straight into the sandy clearing to the left of the fence and follow the sand road 0.3 mile to the launch.  Part of the drive parallels the wood fence.

The Batsto was every bit as much fun as my trip 40+ years ago. Thanks to Meri for putting it together and to Cory for setting a challenging pace.

I am going to count on high water as I only have a 16' boat. I have one extra spot on my rack if it helps.

Hi. I am new to shuttling. Does each person need to have an extra kayak carrier?

Hey folks, just a reminder that the water is still cold. Be sure to pack a change of clothes, just in case!

I canoed this "river" back in '72. 3 in the boat. We flipped when we had to duck under a tree branch and the guy in the middle decided to lean right instead of leaning back. We had a blast. I remember our put-in point was barely wider than the canoe. Is that where we'll be entering? I've always wanted to do the Batso again, so we are REALLY looking forward to another fun trip. Thanks for putting this together, Meri.
