Full Moon Paddle: Wed Sept 18th Jeffers Landing

Full Moon Paddle: Sunset 7:02, moon rise 6:23. Tide is high at 8:20 PM. Launch 6:15 PM from Jeffers Landing beach into the open tidal area of the Great Egg Harbor River.

Anticipate heading up-river into the setting Sun possibly to English Creek, returning down river with the rising moon. Total distance approx 4.5 miles. Duration about 2.5 hours.

This is a low intensity open water paddle. Although conditions are normally benign, Paddles should be comfortable with small wind driven waves, have bracing and maneuvering skills, as well as being familiar with assisted or self rescue techniques - just in case.   PFD's, flashlights, locator lights required. Recommend sit in yaks 12' and longer - shorter boats and sit on tops will have difficulty keeping up with longer touring type kayaks. The salt marsh and tidal river are mystifying at sunset and very disorienting at night...Plan to stay with the group.

Directions: From the Mays Landing-Somers Point Rd/Jeffers Landing Rd. intersection, go south on Jeffers Landing Rd approx 1.4 miles. Just before the silted in remains of Jeffers Landing Marina at 219 Jeffers Landing Rd is the sand beach launch site.   Unload boats & gear on the beach/boat ramp area, park across the street.

Reminder - this is a residential area, please respect the borders and quiet the neighbors enjoy - don't wear out our welcome.

Big Dogs - Usually there are a few big (intimidating) dogs that roam free in this area. So far they have been very friendly - I usually have treats ready (for the dogs - but will share with hungry kayakers).

Go/No Go - If the weather is questionable, I will try to post a go/no go decision on this site about 5 PM launch day. Questions about conditions prior to launch - call the Shack at[masked] or my cell at[masked]-7611.

What a great evening. That strange 13th paddler that kept fading in and out after dark was really interesting.

Had fun on the last leg drafting behind Linda's long boat.

Conditions were perfect for this. Water was flat, almost no breeze, and Linda is a strong paddler!

If you have the conditions and skills, this is a good method of covering distance, increasing speed and saving energy. Try it. - Lead paddler must have good control, steady speed and straight path - following paddler's yak's nose is only inches away from lead's stern so control is important - BUT- you will notice the energy level difference needed to maintain a fast pace when you break out from the draft shadow.

Speaking of pace - would love some input on this - did you feel it was too slow, fast or just right?

I prefer a faster pace, but realize many prefer a slower more relaxed paddle. Tried to adjust the pace to as reasonably steady & slow as possible - but it is more fun making the boat move at the speed it is designed for.
Perhaps a forward stroke clinic would be a good place to start - can arrange - let me know.

Weather was perfect - great sunset over the limitless salt marsh vista. Clear skys, warm water and energetic paddlers!

Incoming tide gave us a big push up river. We arrived very quickly at Cranberry Creek (just before English Creek), opting to explore further up creek with the incoming tide. Aside from a few turtles popping heads up to watch us, not much wildlife seen on this trip.

Returned in darkness to our launch site under shining stars following the moonbeams. A head count revealed that we had not gained any paddlers - no telling when the Jersey Devil will try to sneak into the fun!

Thanks for the response, Sheldon. I guess the meet up notices will advise when I can try this by renting a vessel? As much as I like to shop, don't think I want to buy one just yet :)

First time in this type of kayak. Do I rent one there? How early should I arrive? I understand I can buy a waterproof flashlight there also? I need to bring a PFD and wear appropriate clothing. Is there anything I'm forgetting?
